I recently got a 1960 Apache 10 Short bed Step side and I would like to get an idea of how many were made??? I have found production #s on 1960 cars but can't find any on 1960 trucks. Any help appreciated!

The totals had dropped in the late 50's and were on the rise in '59 again. I suspect that 1960 totals were in that ball park and maybe higher. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2010 Posts: 15 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2010 Posts: 15 | Thanks, but I was looking to narrow it down if possible. It really doesnt matter because I will never sell the truck. But its a 1960 Apache short bed step side 1/2 ton and they seem to be the hardest to find (mayby behind short bed fleet side?)... Trying to find out how many of those were made! | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,893 Socket Breaker | | Socket Breaker Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,893 | This book has production numbers in the back, but I don't think they had individual breakdowns of models until 1964ish... it's been awhile since I've opened that book. Chevrolet Pickups, 1946-1972: How to Identify, Select and Restore Chevrolet Collector Light Trucks (Motorbooks Workshop) (Paperback) by John Gunnell # Paperback: 192 pages # Publisher: Motorbooks; 1st edition (May 1, 1988) # Language: English # ISBN-10: 0879382821 # ISBN-13: 978-0879382827 ---- a list of other great books for old trucks -W | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 | Just some anecdotal evidence from years of looking at these trucks, I would say that 1960 is indeed a more rare year for the 60-66 series. There seem to be many more 1961's that survived than the '60 models. 63-66 seem to be pretty heavily represented. But 1962's seem to be under-represented as well. To me the really rare ones are the 60 and 61 GMC's and even more rare are those early GMC's with lots of side trim and chrome window surrounds, SWB's with big back windows. I'm talking strictly pickups here. I suppose a SWB 1/2 ton 4x4 GMC trimmed out and with a big back window and a Hydromatic would about as rare as you could get. Especially considering that that combination may not have even been available!:) | | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 426 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 426 | I agree with K10. Although with the availability of parts and being able to interchange them allows you to build what ever you desire. I have owned several 63's and know that the parts are harder to find for the 60-63's as opposed to the 64-66 models. I also notice far more fleetsides than stepsides. At least in the south. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 446 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 446 | I'll check thru my books as well. I had that info. at one time, hopefully I can find it again.
I have noticed that not all of the after market parts are available for this year. Forget trying to find an after market hood for a '60, at least I haven't been able to. Lucky my hood is in great shape but I want to find an extra to hold on to just in case. Some of the suspension parts are not available either.
Everything is available for the 235 engine though!

I just dont see very many 60's around and would like a ballpark number. I see alot more 64-66' trucks around ao Im guessing alot more of those were made? Most 60's I do see are junk and hoods seem near impossible to find. I guess I will do what I can with mine.

As far as hood's try wrecking yards that carry classic vehicles or look for a parts truck. I found a truck on Craigs list that had a good hood, however this person didn't have a title and he said he "found" the truck. I wouldn't buy it, even though it was only $300. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 446 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 446 | Okay, here is the info. I have been able to come up with so far. These numbers are not precise however I think they are close.
The production number is somewhere around 407,142 +/-...
86% of Chevy trucks in 1960 were six cylinder. 14% were eight cylinder or about 50,000 trucks. I don't have the breakdown of stepside versis fleetside.
I wish the numbers were more precise. I do believe Chevy made less 450,000 in 1960. And I'm sure it was around 410,000.
Something interesting, by 1966 Chevy produced 250,000 V8 pickup's, which is a 60/40 split for sixes versis eight's.

This was an effort to eliminate the embarrassment of creating the ugliest piece of metal ever to be attached to a vehicle. Now they are hard to find. Not sure, but I heard it. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 446 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 446 | UGLY??? I don't think they are ugly!! That's one of the reasons I bought my '60. Unusual is the word I would use. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2010 Posts: 15 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Feb 2010 Posts: 15 | I couldn't agree more that the hood is NOT ugly. Thats my favorite part. Unfortunatly mine was a farm truck and my hood is banged up pretty good on the corners. I find it hard to believe that CHEVROLET would go around buying 60'-61' hoods and destroying them. If you have a link or any proof to this, I would love to see it! Iron Clad thanks for helping me narrow down the numbers.

I think that there just weren't many replacement hoods available after a wreck
and/or
the owners just didn't like them and found later year replacements for them to update the styling. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 | Once the 62 hood was developed, no more replacement 60 and 61 hoods were created. So in late 61, if you smashed up your truck and needed a replacement hood, unless a 61 hood remained in stock, you got a 62 hood. Chevrolet never bought up hoods to destroy them. Quite the opposite here in the western mountain states. Far more step sides than flare sides. I wonder why that is? | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 800 | "Far more step sides than flare sides. I wonder why that is?"
Maybe that's cuz people like Chevy's better than Fo*d*s! A flareside is Fo*d's version of a Stepside. | | |
