Hiyas.

My dad has a '57 235 inline six in his '53 truck.

After the recent fiasco with the rainwater in the engine and thus the oil because of an unsecure valve cover and other things... , dad bought a valve cover gasket for it.

You can read about that adventure here, if you like:

The gasket is of the cork material.

Now, I am just checking in here about the installion. Put cork gasket down on top of the head, put valve cover on top, line up valve cover and gasket with each other and the bolt holes on the head, and then snug it down with the bolts?

Should we use any sealer stuff? Maybe just a dab here and there to stick the gasket onto the valve cover?

Thought I'd ask... I never know what you folks might know. grin

Woogeroo, I would use a little gasket cement and stick the gasket to the valve cover. It's kinda difficult to keep it lined up on the head.

I put studs on my head, that eliminated most of the alignment problems. I also used Permatex high-tack (the yellow kind that cimes in a tube) to seal it completly.

I always covered 1 face of the gasket completely and stuck it to the cover. let it set up a bit and install. Dont overtighten the bolts you will warp the cover

then after you drive it for a week or so re-tighten them a little. The cork gaskets will "settle" down, or compress a little and thats when the leaking starts!!

I glue them to the valve cover on most other engine models but a 235 the gasket has to clear the head bolts & therm housing. It may be hard to get on. If the cover is in good condition & straight & you have a good fresh gasket I put it on dry. It can be reused that way. Like chipmonk says retighten after a while but like gazim says don,t overdoit.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

I got some of those "T" shaped washers (@ car quest)to hold the cover down. I had to grind them a bit so they'd fit, but I figured this distributes the force of the 4 bolts a bit more evenly.

hello woogeroo, i was thinking about how the water could get on the valve cover, gasket or not, but for the cowl vent drain. does that truck have a cowl vent? if it does , the drain hose must aim right at the valve cover. i noticed this on mine and i'm going to change the direction of the hose so the water from the drain won't hit the engine. hope this helps! good luck.

Yup,
Put gorilla snot between the gasket and valve cover. Keep the side between the gasket and head clean. It has worked very well on my 62 235 in my 50 ad as well as the valve covers on my daughter's Mustang.

clean the surface on the head. i use a "new" wood chisel as a scrapper. be sure the cover is flat. the bolt holes are usually pulled down into "humps'. tap them back and clean the cover real good also. a little cement is ok. the stud idea is great. we used thread to tie the gasket to the cover and a lot of carefull positioning. pain in the neck.
