I've had my 1970 C-10 for almost 10 years. It was given to me by the original owner who was my neighbor. It's a 250 with a 3-speed on the column. No PS, no PB, radio delete and a leaf spring rear suspension. I'm not sure why anyone would order the leaf springs or how unusual that is, maybe someone can fill me in. I love this truck but haven't been able to work seriously on restoring it yet. It is my goal to fix this truck before the old guy that gave it to me passes away. I want him to get to see it. He was nearly old enough to be my grandfather, but he was one of the best friends I've ever had. I moved away about 5 years ago and miss the old guy.

I just purchased the dump truck. I needed a way to haul some brush and saw this in an ebay classified ad. It was close enough for me to get and seemed like a decent deal, not to mention the fact that I liked it. Looking around this site, it seems like some of you have bought better trucks cheaper, but around here a functioning dump body truck is worth this much regardless what type of truck it is. It's a 1959 C-60 with a 261, 4-speed with a 2-speed axle. It shifts good (including the axle), and the PTO and dump bed work great. Unfortunately, the brakes don't work at all and the body is terrible. Mechanically it's original, so I'm happy about that. I hope to find some sheet metal at some point, but for now, it will be used as is - and off the road. It looks to me like 4 wheels are Firestone RH5's and 2 are something else, but they are the outer rears , so I can't see the face of the wheels. The only other part I question is the GVW. It states that the GVW is 19,000. Is that a normal rating? What was available - I know I've seen 14k-17k on other trucks, but never 19k?

Anyway, I'm glad I found this site. I'm sure I will need your help on these projects!

Hello bullitben,

I like them both. I believe your '59 is a Viking. I have a '59 Viking 40 (1 1/2 ton) and it has a GVW of 14,000 lbs. According to my 1959 owners manual, you could either have a 2 or 2 1/2 ton model. Just curious, what size are your tires? The manual says you should have 9 x 22.5. It looks like you have about $1000 worth of tires alone.
The 261's are getting hard to find as well. My Viking has a 292 in it.

Welcome to the "Bolt".

John

According to my reading, I guess mine was ordered with 20" Tube type tires and split rims. Apparently everyone wasn't on the bandwagon yet for the more modern tires of the time. I wish it had 22.5's.

Welcome bullittben, I drove a 1970 pickup for a number of years, used in construction. It had the coils, not too good for a heavier load. I think it even had (aftermarket?) helper springs. They weren't full length leaf springs but went only just past the axle from the shackle.

Welcome to stovebolt...
Nice looking C60, looks like the one I saw on ebay for $1000 in North Carolina a couple of weeks ago. If so you got a good buy in my opinion. As far as the 19,000 GVW it should be correct with your truck specs. My '57 Chev. 6400 (same as a C60) has a GVW of 19,500 lbs and it has similar components, except it has 10X22.5 tubeless tires. Yours is fine for carrying 5 to 6 tons safely as long as your brakes are right. Don't plan on a lot of speed as these trucks were originally meant to run at speeds of 45 to 50 MPH. I've had great service with mine.

Look forward to hearing more about your truck!

James

I love both the trucks. espeacially the 59 c60. If you ask me, the body doenst look that bad on it. I have some old 55-59 trucks and your is better than most of mine. I have an old 58 chev flatbed, I not sure how big it is, i think it is bigger than yours, and its front fenders are literally falling off.

Welcome to the Bolt. You have made a couple of wise moves. A truck will pay its way while a car is nothing but and abcess on a mans pocketbook!!
You guys keep buying up these big rigs and I'm gonna have to have one so I can join the club smile

Hey, Bulittben, how far are you from Spartanburg. The Southern Stovebolt reunion is the 29th of May. Love to have you.

I'm about 30 minutes West of Columbia. I may have to come see some trucks in May. I could have the 70 on the road by then, depending on the $$ situation. It runs and drives great, but I'm in the process of replacing the brake lines (they were rusted out) so that I can get some brakes. The truck only has 72k miles on it. I plan to drive it some looking just like it does (it will be my backup everyday ride behind my '86 GMC). I do have some 6 lug Wheel Vintiques Rally's for it so that I can have a better tire selection. I plan to run them with no center caps or trim rings for now (low budget).
