Your should be able to lock the door from inside are you not?

only if it is closed. when open it won't lock

Pushing the inside handle the opposite way to when you open it, should prevent anyone from opening it from the outside. This cannot be opened with a key.

joes1952... if your having trouble you "Might" have the wrong door control on the wrong side. I run into this because of a previous owner situation and had questioned some things due to the door handles working "sort of backwards" and found that I needed the door control for the correct side.
May not even be close but just trying to help!
