I recharged the battery and it says it has just over 6V ready to go. If I make contact with the foot starter it tunrns over very slow. Now if I take out all the spark plugs and leave them out and turn the engine over the starter just flys and it turns over like I would expect it to. I am not a mechanic by trade so I have no idea what my issue is. I am baffled.

Sometimes they will read the proper voltage then when a load is put to it, it will drop off to nothing if it has a bad cell. It happens all of the time on my Cat, which has 4 6 volt batteries in it,

As you can tell from the replies above there are several things that can cause the starter to crank slow. First you need to realize that unless you put 12 volts to the starter it will always turn slower than a 12 volt starter. Second, 0 or 1 gage battery cables are a necessity. Your negative battery cable and the starter must be well grounded. Check the CCA of your battery and load test your battery. If all of that is as it should be and it still won't turn over your starter may need to be rebuilt. Good luck.

#59874 05/01/2006 6:13 PM | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 | If the battery turns out to be okay and you need to replace the cables, I suggest buying lengths of 0 or 1 guage wire from NAPA and their 'fusion' battery cable ends- They come preloaded with solder and flux. You just strip the end of the wire 7/8" and push it into the terminal while you heat it, when the solder melts and it hits bottom yer done, and there's no risk of a bad connection between the terminal and the cable, which I've run into with 'clamp ons'.

Thanks for all the replies. I had the battery load tested and it failed. So I guess I will be picking up a new battery. I am running 1 guage wire for the system now so hopefully a new battery will solve the problem. I will keep you all posted.
