If ain't broke Break it and fix it.

There is a 3:55 gear set available from Patrick's for about $700 with bearings & seals. | | |

For this set up, your only option is 3.55 gearing in your original rearend. If 3/4 ton, option are different. If 1/2 ton 4 speed, you can keep tranny, but go to open driveline with different rearend with some modifications and fabrication. If three speed, 1/2 ton, you will need new tranny if you want to switch rear ends, I guess what I am saying is, what do you have?

It's about the same price to buy a modern rear-end w/ MUCH better brakes. But along w/ that you will need a new drive shaft. Depending on your choice of rear-ends, the E-brake situation will just be a very simple change over.
