Anyone make one that will fit? Are they all the same up to 89? | | | | | Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,859 Grumpy old guy playing with trucks, cars, and boats | | Grumpy old guy playing with trucks, cars, and boats Joined: Aug 2007 Posts: 1,859 | I made a custom receiver hitch for my S-10 many years ago. I wanted the receiver to be hidden behind the license in the rear roll pan. I used a late 70's monte carlo spring loaded license plate holder to hide it.
2 mounting plates, a cross tube, a few gusset plates, the receiver tube with reinforcement ring, and spring-loaded chain anchors.
took one hour to measure, about 3 hours making the parts, then it took about 3 hours of fitting, and about an hour of welding.

What was the modification? I don't have a welder capable of burning through steel that thick - it's just a small stick welder - OK for small projects or sheet metal, but not for something structural. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 | I have purchased two hitches from Summit Racing.Thats one option, the other is to drag out the welder and make one up to fit.It woudnt be that hard of a job. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,971 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,971 | I have a 3600 that has a reciever hitch added to it. The bumper was cut out and the reciever it put through it and welded to the bumper. It is bracketed to the frame. Apparently, it used to tow a water tank for a excavation company.
I have another truck that had an aftermarket bumper on it that was made for an S10 I think. It fit pretty good. | | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,438 | My '56 Chevy 1/2-ton has a Reese receiver hitch, part # 06082. The holes had to be elongated a touch to mount it. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 863 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 863 | Bought a universal hitch that fits ford/chevy/dodge toyota... only mod was fitting thr spare tire holder-needed trimming.... | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 549 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 549 | What was the modification? I ordered the hitch from a local vendor, which fit pretty well. Just drilled holes in the frame to bolt it in. For the spare, I cut and bent the pass side hanger and hooked into a hole drilled in the side of the hitch. Here's a picThats what I'm talking about - who was the local vendor you used & did he have a hitch that said it would fit a 58 chevy or how did you order it? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 15 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 15 | | | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 446 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 446 | Avette4me...I have the same receiver on my '60. U-haul could not think outside the box to get a hitch that would fit my 59 longbed. Their computer went back to 1963. I measured the width of the frame and crossreferenced it to the new hitches. It appears that a 34 inch wide frame is common to chevys up through the 90s and beyond. The hitch I got fit perfectly underneath the barden bumper, however being a longbed... the hitch bottoms out easily on a slope. I plan to modify the hitch to go through the barden bumper for about 2 1/2 inches more ground clearence. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 549 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 549 | Thats what I'm talking about - who was the local vendor you used & did he have a hitch that said it would fit a 58 chevy or how did you order it? He's a local guy that does car stereos, tinting, as well as hitches and the like. I gave him frame width and distance from the end of the frame to the outside of the bumper (at the hitch point). I don't believe he brought it in specific for a '58. I think it came to him with some assembly required. Either way, it bolted up nicely when I got it.

Yea, I've towed with mine a lot as well. The hitch was one of the first things I added. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 452 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 452 | I bought a universal Class 3 hitch kit from Princess Auto here in Calgary. They had a pile of them on sale for $89cdn. It had enough play in the assembly to adjust to my 3600, and is very sturdy once all tightened up. Only had to drill holes in the frame ends. This one hangs down a bit... definitely not hidden, but it has bolt-on angle braces rather than long side-plates. Made it quite flexible for installation.
Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice) \'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run. My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787. Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but ignorance means you don't know you can't do something.

The drawbar is 3" square tube w/ 3/8" wall thickness, side plates are also 3/8". It's mounted using 2 factory holes plus 4 more holes that were put in the frame by the po for the crude hitch that was on the truck when I got it. The receiver tube comes out to about 1/4" back from the end of the bumper.
