Has anybody used these fenders?

I was looking at that link and it looks like there is not much of a flange on the back of that fender to bolt it to the truck bed...? I thought that was weird.. maybe my eyes deceive me or the photo is not all that good..

Thanks for your response Mike, the mounting lip appears to be comparable with steel fenders. That may not be enough though since fiberglass is not as strong as steel. That's one of the issues that prompted my question. I would like to know of somebody that has used them and can point out the pitfalls or benefits.

Ah, ok, Cool.. I guess one could always make a steel strip that could run along that flange to help support that thing. Could sandwitch the fiberglass between it and the bed wall.

I am certinly no help in this.. I was just checking this out and thought the flange was weird...

God Bless...

You gotta really be careful when going with fiberglass parts. There are real good quality fiberglass parts out there but judging by his price which is very much on the low side. I would say there can't be very much material in them which makes them cheap quality. Don't let the shiny finish fool you that means nothing. Also in his description he say's they are not trimmed which means lots of trimming and grinding to get all the excess off I guess that's no big deal unless you like fiberglass dust. I don't think I would touch that guys stuff with a 10 foot pole unless he takes returns and pays shipping on that.

My 2 cents

........the ad says they are used. For what its worth I have ran fiberglass fenders from R&R out of Tenn for 10 years. Not the first problem what so ever.. and I drive my truck. Richard has been in business for years and he also hand laps his fiberglass. Its not sprayed which causes high/low uneven places even with the best. I have found R&R Fiberglass to be "heavy guage" and tough.....

..just my .o2.

Achipmunk is right there are companies that manufacture great quality parts. It's product like this guy's selling that gives fiberglass a bad name. Hand layed is the way to go. You can see in the ebay ad that those have been sprayed.

Chopper gun (sprayed) fibreglass is always inferior to hand laid 'glass.(I found out the hard way)
It's inconsistent in thickness and generally poorer quality.Hold one up to a strong light and you'll see what I mean. eek

Shell out the extra bucks for hand laid,or you'll regret it....
Unless you really want fibreglass, try and source some good originals, they're still out there.

I am going with McMillan Fiberglass in Ontario Canada. http://www.mercury-pickup.net/mcmillan.htm

These are the BEST fiberglass fenders I've ever seen and he uses high quality resin. To show the durability he laid a fender on it's side and stood on it and bounced. Now try that with any other fiberglass and it will crack in an instant. They are heavy gauge and they guarantee that there will be no air bubbles at all. They even put marks in for where you need to drill holes. The 1942-46 chev fenders are the most exact set of fenders I've ever seen. Check them out and be amazed!

Thanks for the pointers guys. I will just be patient and find some good originals but in the meantime will paint what I have with ripples and all. I have enlarged my wheel openings which removed most of the bad with the fenders I have.
