If it is truly coming from the exhaust, then you should have a blue smoke from the exhaust. Pull the plugs and inspect for oil fouling. If your exhaust is clean and clear then most likely the valve pan is leaking and just running down and around.

Sure it's not just a black water trail, condensation, coming from an exhaust leak?

OK, it is a 216 in my 52 Chev, 1 ton.

Exhaust smokes blue, plugs are black.

I have three spots on the block where there are drips building up.

In a recent valve job, I replaced the valve seals, used NOS valves, ground and lapped them but did not knurl the guides. I suspect either the valves are leaking oil into the cylinders or the rings are bad.

either of your suspicions could be right, I would suspect the rings. neither is good news unfortunately.

Scott,
I have one located in Freedom that I was going to rebuild last spring. I decided to try and save the 216 and not to go through a rebuild but it looks like it is not going to work out. Strange thing is I had good compression after the valve job. All except one at 120 and one at 110. Not the best, but acceptable. I will do another one when I get a chance and see what, if anything has changed. Also there was almost no ridge in the cylinders when I had it apart. I didn't bother to mic them at that time and it looked like they still had some cross hatching on the walls from a honing.

valve guides would show good compression, yet leak oil from the top. So would bad valve seals.

That makes sense. Valve closed, cylinder sealed, Valve open and oil can flow into the cylinder from the head. Gues I have to decide if I want to re-do the head and try it or just rebuild a 235.
