It's the right size but when I tried to put this thing on the pinion, the rubber seal tore. I got another one yesterday. The retainer and U-joint yoke are cleaned and painted, being careful not to paint anything that the oil seal and felt ring touch. I really don't want to mess up another one.

If it is that tight on the spline, you may have to wrap the shaft with electrical tape to protect the seal until it is installed in the bore, I don't remember them as being tight to the spline though, hope that helps.

It looks like it'll fit, but real tight. I oiled the heck out of it and slowly tapped it on with a piece of wood. As soon as it started going on the shaft, it seemed to smash the rubber ring and the tiny spring inside the rubber seal started coming out. It sure doesn't go on easy though.
I'm afraid if I put tape on the spline, it'll make it even tighter. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy mummdogg, something is wrong, do you still have your old seal, can you find a number on it? Could you measure the part you're try to install the seal over/on and post that dimension here? What is the number of the seal you're trying to install? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,846 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,846 | If it's that tight on the spline, you'll never get the yoke through it without totally destroying it. Try comparing sizes with the original seal, and I'll bet you find the old one has a larger inside diameter. The lip should be a snug, but not excessively tight fit on the hub of the yoke, not the input shaft spline. Jerry

You must be putting the seal in backwards. The lip faces in. When the yoke goes in it pushes the lip of the seal back just enough to seal. They say money can't buy happiness. I used a wood board laying flat against the seal to tap it in. I made sure the open end of the rubber was facing the bearing.
I honestly think you guys are correct in saying it may be the wrong I.D. diameter. O.D. diameter seems perfect.
Currently, I'm in Pierre, SD. When I get home on Wednesday, I'll give ya the part number thats in the box and try to give ya the best I.D. measurement I can give. The best I can do is with a tape measure...sorry.
Thanks alot, ~Ron | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 453 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 453 | OK...The part number in the box is "23755". There's another number, "CRWH1 R". Also, the dimension of the yoke that goes threw the I.D. of the seal is @ 2.59375". The O.D. is @ 3.46875", 0.50" wide. Like I said, it's the best I can do with what I have.
Hoped this helped.

I should've just taken your P/N with me when I bought the seal. I guess I just assumed by tellin' them what I needed, it would be the same P/N you gave me. Then when I tore the first one, I thought I did it wrong or the seal rubber was supposed to be that tight and went and got the same thing. For now on, I'll take the advise from the tribal elders here before I make any purchases.
DON'T GIVE UP ON ME!
Thanks, ~Ron | | |
