Only problem is I don't know what rear-end ratio I have now. The vehicle is a 54 3100 with a 235 and Hydramatic four speed. I believe the rear end is stock. When I ring her out I can get about 65 according to my speedo, but cannot cruise at more than 55 without fear of blowing something. How can I figure out what ratio I've got and what I need?

Sounds right as per your description too. You can get the 3.55:1 ratio ring & pinion kit to be able to cruise @ 65. Chevy Duty Part # 93-511 Good luck. | | |
#52357 11/14/2005 11:46 AM | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 | Don't forget,you can get about the same overall benefit from changing from 28" diameter tires to 31" tires as from changing your 3.90 ratio to a 3.55,and it won't cost you near as much in labor.Or,if you went for both changes,at 65 mph,your rpm's would drop from 3,050 to 2,500.
Just something to think about.
