Hello My name is John Scanlan and I just aquired a new project. I picked up a 1959 1 ton flatbed gmc from a farmer in Washington. The GMC has a 270 ci straight six that is pretty impressive as far as physical size. It was stored in a barn since it was bought and has 53000 miles on it. I bought it for 200 dollars because of a dented fender. The farmer threw in a perfect fender for it and was sorry it was the wrong color. It does not have any rust. After a new battery and a few hours of wrenching, it fired up. It now runs and drives. Anyway, I want to throw a dana 60 under the front install a transfer case. I do have two questions. 1) How strong is the rearend under a one ton, and is it a Spicer? 2) Where do you get front park lights, it is the only real part that needs to be replaced that I do not have. The truck has a yellow cab with black doors and fenders, it is impressive and I cannot wait to drive it.

Wow, what a find. welcome to the bolt. I'm not the guy to answer your questions but I'm sure someone will come to the rescue.

You may want to post this question in the Big Bolts Forum where all the big bolt guys visit regularly.
We also love pictures so as soon as you can get them on a photobucket/webshots/flicker or something like that, please give us a link to it so we can see it.
Good luck and your already a long way ahead of the game!

EDIT: I have a really good friend in Ashton Idaho so if your close I could get you two together. He has a 49 resto-rod smile

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile

Welcome to the 'bolt, JOHNSCANLAN cool

What a fantastic find and purchase. It's good such a nice truck ended up in your hands dance

I don't know about question #1 but #2 you might be able to find in the 'Parts Wanted' section of the 'bolt. There are usually a couple good people with parts. One word of advice: a used old one is way sturdier than a new, shiny, made in China part.
