I have a 305 chevy for my 48 chevy truck. I already have the motor and would like to use it. I am hoping to get around 275 horepower and 300 ft pounds of torque. A 350 would be easier but I want to use what I have any suggestions.

Install a set of Sealed Power flattop hypereutectic pistons, a Comp Cams 268H cam, and a set of 58CC heads with 1.94" intake valves and 1.6" exhausts, with .550" lift single valve springs. Get a factory aluminum intake and a Quadrajet carb, and run dual exhausts with stock cast iron exhaust manifolds and 2 1/2" pipes through mid-70's Cadillac mufflers. You'll make your target HP and torque, with a building cost for the engine of just under $3,000.00.

Even in stock config, I think it's a good motor. Have used several and liked them all. Just think like its a 283 with bigger pistons and keep the oil changed and run it like you stole it!!

305's are bringing a premium in this area. Demand is higher than 350's by far. Keep it.

Some of the 305s of the mid 80s were real screamers.I had one in a 56 Chevy sedan,and it was a real runner and very economical to operate.Better known as high performance 305s.They were used in Camaros,Monte Carlos,and some Pontiacs right around 1984.Mine had a highrise Edelbrock manifold and 600CFM Edelbrock carb.and stock exhaust manifolds with dual exhaust.That car is stiil around and running just great,and is for sale for $35,000.

A little late on the post, sorry. I have a 305 in my delivery. Put a set of late model vortec heads (for a 305), a low end Crane came, Performer vortec intake, and a Holley 650. Waiting on headers to crank it up. Did a lot of research on the 305. Round trackers around here like them. Heads make the difference. Should be over 300hp

I swapped in a cam and heads on my sisters car. Dont know the outcome, however it woke the engine up fairly well.

A 283 is a totally different animal. The 305 has close to a 265 bore, and a 350 stroke. That translates to lots of low end torque, but nowhere near the 8,000+ RPM capability of the 283. Gear it high, and keep the RPM down to a reasonable level, and the 305 is a good choice. Just don't get crazy with the top speed before you shift.
