Quick question about it: Is it something that will have to be totally removed, like etching primer, if it's left on for a month? Doing practice body work on our rusty 96 exploder, and I have sanded/DAed/ground out 2 spots of rust, covered them in Duplicolor Rust convertor. Planning on fixing them with either some homemade patch panels, or using fiberglass matting with body filler. NOT the way I plan on doing the '64, but I figure it will give me some sanding/finishing experience before I get started with the classic.
Thanks,
Tony

rust converter isn't a paint it's a chemical that converts the iron oxide back to iron tannate to neutralize it - it's meant to be directly painted over without sanding, and it should only be used on rusty areas, not clean metal

I use the Loctite brand of rust converter. It works fine. It will only work where there is rust. Therefore do not remove all the rust, leave some there. You spray the part and wait 30 minutes, the part will turn black and you can paint over it.

Thanks for the replies.

I don't primer over it? Just paint it?

Last question (so far). How much is it going to set progress back if it's exposed for a week or two with just that covering it?

Thanks again,
Tony

When I strip my body parts using paint stripper and did not have time to sand the parts I use Right Stuff De-Ruster formula #3000,metal conditioner, rust preventer from Agri Supply. Comes in a quart bottle and is green in color. I just soaked a rag really well (heavy rubber gloves) and wiped everything down. The bottle states you can use a brush, roller or sprayer to apply. I could leave the metal for months and never see a hint of rust starting. That is pretty darn good for hot humid SC weather. The bottle states that you can primer over it. But I was using it to keep rust from forming until I could sand all traces of paint and or primer off that the stripper did not remove so I could prime everything until I was ready do any repairs IE; welding, hammering, bondo work.
I can not find anything bad to say about this product, just make sure you wear rubber gloves, mask and eye protection.

I, like above, used the product called Right Stuff. I picked it up at Advance Auto. It was about 5 bucks a quart and seems to work well. I put it in a spray bottle as that seems to get into all the nooks and crannies and then wipe down. Sometimes if you used it too heavy it dries to a white powder which can be wire brushed off. It has an odor that doesn't smell too great and can irritate your nose and skin. After it is completely dry it turns black and can be primered. Good luck and have fun.

chev4t6: I think Advance quite carrying Right STuff. I work partime as a commercial delivery driver for them and one of the garages ask me about a week ago why we didn't carry it. I went back and looked and sure enough we don't...at least at this store. Advance has been making some changes lately and I figure they may have dropped it. Example: here they have dropped a well known brake supplier and went to Wagner. They can still get a lot of stuff they don't have on the self anymore but would probably have to order it overnight.

Just info....

Alvin,
I would bet it is not one of their better selling items. Don't need any at this time on this project and I think I still may have some left. Thanks for the heads up

Thanks all for the help. Sunday I will look for that Right Stuff, hit it with the DA, and be set for a short time.
