An exploding one does huge damage and can ruin your crank.It's worth the money to me to have one replaced or properly repaired.

I was cruising about 65 when I heard a noise.. did not think anything of it because an 18 wheeler had just passed me, I then heard a strange noise, looked at my temp gauge, it had started to warm up... pulled off the hiway, open the hood and said, crap...but I was lucky... I did have to tow it home but....

Are harmonic balancers custom drilled to balance the engine they're installed on, or are they all interchangeable on a given engine type? Note the drilled balance holes in the picture that was linked to above - would they be unique to that engine, or does the factory just have a gon full of balancers that are pressed onto the engines as they go by?

mine did not have a bolt, and I dont think it was a dealer option.. I could be wrong though ..but

No bolt was used, at least between 47-55.
If someone has drilled and tapped for a bolt (it has been posted often that a bolt from a 350 crank has been used), would you let us know if this can be done with the crank in the block. I would really like to do this on my 261 before I put the "front clip" back back on my Suburban.

Keeping the hole square to the crank can be tricky but if you have a friend to help, it's not that big of a deal. The guy with the drill looks straight down keeping the bit straight from left to right. The helper watches from the side keeping the drill straight up and down.
Or you can make a guide fixture if you have access to a lathe. | | |
