Can anyone tell me if this is 216 or 235? Ebay motor I've been looking for 235 to get rebuilt while I'm waiting for my 216 to give out.

It seems like I have seen post along this line in the past, but I have had no luck with the search feature.

Of course, my best bet would probably be to request the engine numbers from the seller.

It's most likely a 54-up 235, as there's a valve cover on it that attaches with 4 small bolts on the sides of the cover, and it appears the side cover does not extend above the block. The 216's and splash-oiler 235's has a side cover that went to the top of the cylinder head.

Not quite true. tclederman pointed out to me awhile back that the later babbited 235s, 1950-1953, had the short side cover.

Get the block and head number. If it is a 1954 it will drop in without water pump modifications if it is after 55 you will have a clearance issue. You will probably need to do some changes in regards to rear bellhousing and mounts as well. Its important that it turns free if not removing the bellhousing becomes a bit more problematic. I looked close at the pictures and it looks like a 235 to me you just need to check the numbers, it is not unusual to see 261 heads on some of these engines due to cracking issues with 216 and 235 originals.

53 Dumpy,

Try to get the block and head casting numbers from the seller. Post them here and someone should be able to identify what it is.

As stated above, it could be a 1954-1962 235. Or, it could also be a 1954-1963 261.

I'd like to know to. How about the emerg brake? Is that a true stop from a school bus?

If it is anywhere close to you, you can't go wrong. There is no bids, no indication of a reserve. It has an alternator as well. Gotta be a good buy for scrap if nothing else.

46Canopy,

The engine/transmission shown is from a 2 ton truck. Most rigs 1 1/2 ton and up used this style parking brake. It's very common...nothing special, just not for pickups.

Wouldn't the engine be usable if it is the 235?

I drug home a 47 3600 that someone installed this set up in. Let's just say it's in there..... but shouldn't be done.

I may have the answer to my own question. It looks like from inliners.org that it is a 55-57 235 CI. Will I be able to swap out my 216 mounts, bellhousing and tranny to put it in my '51 3100? Is the water pump shaft length the only issue in putting the newer engines in place of the older? Can I replace the water pump and be ready to go?

Well, she's all mine. $103 for complete engine and tranny. Now I've got to get it home and talk to the engine shop.

Ok, I've got it back home and the stamped number on the boss behind the distributor is F315A. What does this tell me?

That style of engine ID started being used in 1957:

F315A

F = built in Flint, MI
3 = March
15 = 15th day of that month
A = 235 engine in a car with a standard/manual transmission

This information does not help with the year. Maybe you can find the block and head date casting codes and post them here?

All 1957 and later automobile 235 engines came with hydraulic lifters.

The block and head numbers are listed in an earlier post and Inliner's website indicates that the engine is a 55-57 235. If the style of engine ID started in 1957, then it would seem that I have a 1957 235 that was once in a car, but at some point was put into a big truck with a 4-speed and a driveshaft e-brake (since that's what is hanging off the back of it now). A 235 with hyd lifters would be a nice replacement for my 216.

I think since it is still on the trailer, I will run it down to the engine shop and have them dig into it and tell me if it is a good candidate for (A) a rebuild or (B) a source of parts. I'm hoping for (A).
