I have a 1946 GMC and lost the title. IT was sighed by the seller but was never put in my name. This was in 1983.This Truck belonged to a good friend that was killed in a car wreck. His dad gave it to me and I am finaly ready to fix it up. What is the best way to get a title? I am thinking buy a parts truck with a good title.Any thoughts?

In AZ. I go to my insurance agent, give him a few bucks & he gives me a notarized paper, I take it to the DMV & presto! they make me a 'Bonded Title'. Easy as pie & avoids all the hassle of a signature on the wrong line or whatever petty problems that exist. Check with your State, gotta be some way easy.

First things first, we need to see some pictures of your truck!

I think you need to check out your local DMV laws. It may be easier then you think. Here in Washington its about a two year process, bonded title and all. Some states seem to not have many issues with older vehicles. Let us know what you find out.

I am a licensed Texas salvage dealer. Ohio is one of the more "difficult" title states. Sometimes it is better to title a vehicle in one of the easy states and then transfer that title.

In Kansas, if the vehicle is an "antique", meaning 35 years or older, you need a bill of sale. Then the Hiway Patrol will come to the house, verify the VIN, give you areport for $10, and you take that to the courthouse to get a new title in your name for another $10-$20. Been there, done that. Nealy every state is different. Call the DMV in your area.

Thanks for the info. I have done salvage title work in the past,so I know how that works.My Truck is all a part, cab off frame and has been for some time.I sand blasted the bed and cab and primed it before I put it in storage. The doors are in good shape rear fenders are solid, front fenders need replaced,every thing else is solid.I lost all of my pictures of all my cars when I loaned out my photo album and never got it back.He says he gave it back but I don't think so.I may have a picture laying lose some where but it would be hard to find.

did your friends dad ever have it in his name?i lost a title once and all i had to do was go to the title office and in less than 5 min,walked out with a new title.worth a shot.good luck

If I remember correctly,no it was signed by the person he bought it from.Its been along time scents I had it Its hard to remember.I still lived at home with parents then and now I have been married 23 years.
