Steering column is out of a mid 70's chevy car, tilt wheel.
I have had issues in the past week having to "jiggle" the connecting rod that runs down the column to the "starter" switch I pressume?, seems NOW it just plain came apart or is somehow jammed into position, Im going to start digging into the inards of the column to get to the key switch barrell, ANY input on what I should be looking for???

That is usually the problem. 2 screws hold it on. Pull the switch loose & see if the key will turn.

One of the tumblers in the ignition switch broke and jammed the key. It wouldn't turn and the key would not come out. Replaced the ignition key set and worked fine.

I've been wiring mine up and last night the darned thing would not turn back and its a fairly new switch. I was going to remove it from the column anyway and use the dash switch so it just forced me to deal with it sooner than later..

Replaced the ignition setup and everything was OK.

| | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,703 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,703 | well after removing the lock assy I was able to start the truck for a few days with a pair of pliers while searching for a new lock set, then I found the culprit the inner mechanism in the tilt wheel, the gears that engages the the rod that runs down the column to the switch went south and broke into a few pcs.
Binding up is what most likely killed the lock set then the rest went afterwards.
So I am patiently waiting for the IDIDIT column I just ordered.

He took it to a dealership and they put in a new ingnition switch in the column. Does the same thing after the bill and he gets it back. In that column there is a collar that turns with the floor shift so you can't turn the key unless it is in park or neutral. The timing of that collar was off.
Before correcting the problem, I could get the key out by moving the tilt up and down at the same time as turning the key to the off position. | | |
