It is a 800 mile trip one way. I believe it is a one ton or maybe a ton and a half. My dad doesn't know. I do know that my great uncle built the dumpbox for it himnself. I was wondering if anyone could give me an estimate of how much it would probably weigh. I know that without seeing a pic it is hard to guess but hoping for some ideas. My car trailer has only a 7000 lb rating. I have a new Duramax to pull it with so that is not an issue. Better get a 12K rated trailer or have it hauled. | | | | Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 100 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 100 | I just talked to my dad and he said it is eight lug axles and 700-18 tires and wheels.

Whatever you get, be sure it has brakes.

My great uncle had it stored in the garage for probably 25 plus years then about 5 years ago my uncle got it out and put plates and such and was driving it. Well my cousin has it now, but I am going to get it. How much would be a good starting price to offer? I have no idea what else is wrong with it, if anything.

I only lost one tire/wheel. Ended up not paying for it, my cousin doesn't really have any use for it. It has an updated drivers door, one with a wing window. The original is still there, stored in the garage. I will probably get it next time I am back up there. The front of the hood has a little dent, and there is a small scrape down the drivers side. The only rust through I have found is on the floorboard on the drivers side. The back window is cracked but still in place.
I am hoping to get some time to see if it still runs. It is supposed to. May be a great IRWIPI story.
Since I don't have a 6 volt charger would it hurt anything to try to jump it with a 12 volt truck. I am probably going to just leave it 6 volt instead of upgrading to 12. When I figure out how to make an album just for this truck in my photobucket I will post a link.

The engine can be started with 12 volts, but don't crank it too long as to burn it out. I ran my old GMC suburban that way for over 5 years and sold it with the same six volt starter. I noticed the engine is a later 235, check the casting numbers to see what year. What's with asking the questions and then ignoring the answer? You're lucky that you only lost a tire! | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,703 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,703 | Nice truck! , I bet it was a long haul home with that beast on a trailor...lol | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 1,186 | Great truck! Depending how long it's been since it was last run, don't be in a rush to start it without doing some prep work. Use fresh gas and check everything prior to starting. A little work now could save you some headaches later.

I think it's great you were able to keep it in the family, and I love the price you paid. Submit a story and pics to the gallery - it would be another fine addition. Oh - nice to meet you, too. | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 684 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 684 | Looks like a nice truck. Like Bruce said take your time in starting it. Along with fresh gas pull the plugs and squirt a little oil in the cylinders and remove the valve cover and oil the valve stems and rockers. I didn't ask IF I COULD PULL IT I only asked what it might weigh. I knew it would be a little overweight. It was a deal where I kinda had to leave right now to go get it. The local rental store was already closed, and I don't think they allow there trailers to be pulled out of state anyway. I put heavier rated tires on my trailer last time they were replaced. Yes it is a later engine. The original seized up one is still sitting in the corner of the garage back home. Where is the casting number on the motor??

One of the pictures of the engine compartment shows what appears to be a belt driven hydraulic pump and a firewall mounted sump. There is a lever attached to the pump that goes through the firewall into the cab. Is that a covered fuse box nestled up next to the sump tank? Lots of fun stuff to figure out and play with..good luck and thanks for the pictures. Stuart | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,946 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,946 | Cool truck!! And the price was right, too!!
By all means, use fresh gas when you start it--either from a container, or else clean the tank. You would not believe the havoc that old gas can cause. Been there, done that!! | | | | Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,470 Bond Villain | Bond Villain Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,470 | I ran my '39's starter on a 12-volt battery for years. The problem is with the rest of your electrics -- 12 volts will certainly fry the gas guage and sending unit (assuming they still work anyway) as well as the other guages.
Check the wiring, though. On the older, non-running trucks, the wiring is usually a fire waiting to happen.
Good luck! John

I had to do that because my charging system seems to have something wrong with it. | | | | Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 102 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2007 Posts: 102 | Nice Truck, 800 mile trip, I bet that burned up some Petro | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 140 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 140 | Nice truck.
