I can't find any info on it. Are you looking for overdrive, underdrive, hauling or towing? | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . I have some pictures of auxiliary transmissions of different sizes on my web shots account (link below).

That 8031 has all the brackets, shifter and links and is just $200. I will keep hunting for a 5831. I was wanting to get a little more highway speed for my truck when I haul my antique tractor. The auxiliary, if it is OD, would be helpful when unloaded or lightly loaded, or if you have more HP available.
At least my 1 ton with a 1955 235, 4.56 gears, and 32" tires was geared about right when I had 3,000 or 4,000 lb in the bed, an OD gear would have done me no good. When empty it would have been a great help.

It would sure be helpful if you could write a tech tip about the Brownies. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 | I agree-I'm hoping to acquire a 10 speed Mono Shift for my '45 Mack, and if that happens I'll be looking at putting its current 6031 into my '57 GMC 350. I didn't realize the engine wouldn't have enough muscle to run the overdrive. I'll put cup holders in instead and enjoy a coffee as I go down the highway. The tractor is small as tractors go, an Oliver Super 55. It weighs about 3200 lbs. What kind of rig did they put those 5831 spicers in then if it wasn't something like my 2 ton with a 235 in it? Other than the size of the yokes on mine it is probably usable but still heavier than I would like. Spinning big gears eats horse power and shear weight eats up payload and both fuel mileage, it would be counter productive to use a box that eats up more than it saves. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 | Super 55; I was looking for info on the 5531 in my '54 GMC 350,and I just typed in "specifications,5531 Brown Lipe transmission" on Google, and found a few links with interesting stuff;one was an IH site International Harvester CTS-11/12 R-Series Motor Truck Service Manual
(Hope this works!) where they list the 5831 as a factory installed box on Cornbinders. It even lists the ratios, number of bearings, and how much lube it requires. Should be easy to find-it was only 2 or 3 down from the top. Speed

Also, the Clark 5 speed,IF it turns out to be an overdrive,is 0.80:1. With the axle in high,I have 6.40:1. With 38 inch tall tires, that gives me about 80 mph @ 2600 rpm. If the trans. isn't overdrive,it'll be about 65 mph. Going to a tire 40 inches tall, without OD,I show 67 mph,and with OD,84 mph.assuming enough power and nerve,of course...I suspect this truck may be OVER-overdriven.(More gearing than I could find the horsepower to ever use.) OR Putting it in other terms,70 mph with 40's,double over, etc. would be 2170 rpm's. If it's a direct 5th trans. I'd have 2700 rpms. I guess my next logical move is setting myself to getting a title for it,so I can go learn how to drive it. Got the lights working right, except the low beams on the headlights. That may require a new dimmer switch. I have brakes, but the HydraVac isn't doing anything. No vacuum leaks,so,to my way of thinking,it has to be something plugged in the hydraulic side.(or maybe it's just full of rust...) I still have no charging system, and am guessing the brushes are bad or stuck in the generator. I guess I'll try a rebuild on the generator, and hope the regulator is okay. Well, onward we go ....
