I finally found a local guy to print reproduction VIN plates like the 1/2 ton plates available from the Filling Station Reproduction parts, but with 16000 for the GVW. I don't know how many I should order, maybe 50. Mongo, if you read this, how many two speed decals did you have made up?
The plate would be for my 1948, and I don't know what other years it would be good for. There is a picture at the photolink

Please put me on your list, I would be very interested in getting a new Vin Plate for my 1948 Chevy Coe.

email me at [email protected] and I'll make sure I save your email if this thing gets done. I think I finally have a willing printer.

Will you have different weight ratings?
As 16,000 lb would be a 2 ton, and some 1.5 ton folks may be interested if you had a lesser one.

Any idea on price?

If I change the weight on the plate it's another set up. I don't have a quote yet, should have one by Monday. If it's cheap enough, I could make some for 1 1/2 tons too. The thing is it would be another screen for the printing.Too bad it wasn't stamped on.

If you decide to do 1.5-tons, sign me up for one.

Also, if you want to have this included in the May Stovebolt Newsletter, just send us an email ([email protected]) with the details (don't put it here -- send an email).

John

Yes,I noticed the hp ratings are different, as well as the rpm. I will make sure that the image is correct if I make more plates.

Ask your printer to gang a number of plates on one screen. He will probably charge for each plate set-up, but each run will produce varied tags. Then, it's simply a matter of cutting the plate apart. I don't know the screen frame size he's using, but in most cases six tags would easily fit.

The quote I got was $7 plus taxes for plates. Would people be willing to pay about $8 for a plate?

Are you making anything for your trouble and time involved?

The cheaper the better, but I would be willing to pay a little more than that, but less than $15 including shipping.

Put me down for a pair of 48 6400 (16,000 lb) plates.

Thanks,
Grigg

Grigg,
Not really in it for a money maker, but I would have to put out some coin to make a run. $8 is the cost and taxes. I noticed the half ton plate at the filling station is $21. I am sure that with taxes and shipping it would be below $15. I have messaged the printer about multiple plates on one screen to cover the 1 ton, 1.5 ton and 2 ton, but I haven't heard back. I have a picture of a two ton, and it says " 16000 lbs and 83.5 at 3000 rpm", what would the 1 ton and 1.5 ton have on it. If anyone has a picture of those email it to me at [email protected]. Also, I am assuming that these are for the 47 to 49 trucks. Not sure there is enough interest in a 1 ton anyhow. Seems like 1.5 is in demand though.

even at $20 just being able to get one would be worth it. quality would also be a factor, last thing anybody wants is after 6+ months it to start peeling

Just got a message from the printer, I asked him what type of ink and it will be a two part epoxy. Sounds good to me, it is rated for metal and high heat.

Super55,

I'm interested in obtaining one for a 1 ton truck, but will settle for a 1 1/2 ton if necessary!

$ 15.00 per plate including shipping seems very reasonable to me!

I can print 1 tons just as well on one screen and it won't cost me more. Like I mentioned on the page before, this ain't a money making deal for me. It started because my plate is so faint I can only make out a few little lines of text. If you can give me the GVW and the horsepower rating and rpms for a one ton I am pretty sure I can "git er done". I am only getting 50 made up, but I might tell the printer to hold the art work if there is a demand.

Paul,

As you know, I am in for a couple of 'em. Any rough estimate on how soon they might possibly be ready? Thank you so much for going throught the effort of making these. I think you should charge just a little more and keep a few dollars for all of the research and work you put into this. I am certain that nobody would mind at all.

I am just trying to get the font as close as possible on the lettering. The lettering on my tag was gone, Grigg Mullen III sent me a clear photo. I was going by the reproduction plate I got from the Filling Station Restoration Parts, but it is for a half ton and the lettering and fonts didn't match the 2 Ton. I hope to get the art work finished this weekend (I teach and work about 12 hours a day so weekends are the only time, sorry fellas) and then they will go to the printer.

Super,

Sorry, I don't have the necessary values for the 1 ton.

I was wondering if someone else who already owns a 1 ton could add the necessary information here?

I'm new to the group - glad to learn of the Big Bolts forum and can already see that there's a lot of great info out there. Pls put me down for one of the 2-ton VIN plates. I just acquired a '48 w/dump grain bed and 2-spd rear (my 2nd big bolt) and am making a BIG shopping/work list right now. My original tag is barely legible, so this is a great service. Thanx in advance,
Scott B.

Okay. Now I am getting confused about why some tags say serial no. and some say chassis no. Seems like there is a lot of variations. Anybody want to kick in and give me an explanation? My original idea was to make a reproduction for my 1948 and for that I am going to go with what Grigg sent me:

1948 2ton 16000 lbs. 83.5 hp at 3000 rpm and listed as chassis no.

Other information I have received is

Spanky listed 1.5 ton at 14000 lbs

I have a picture from Grigg's 1 ton with info as follows:
1952 1ton 8800 lbs. 85 hp at 3300 rpm and listed as serial no.

I also saw the picture from toomany2count with info as follows:
19?? 1 ton 8800 lbs 81.5 at 3100 rpm and listed as serial no.

Spanky has sent info that 1 1/2 ton would be 14,000 and hp and rpm would be according to year.

As you can see there are lots of variations, but I don't think I can print all of them. Would like one tag for 2ton, one for 1.5ton and one for 1 ton. I would like some feed back as to what hp, rpm, and either serial no. or chasis no. for the 1 and 1 1/2 tons guys would want.

You can see the art work I have prepared at this link:

Could it be that 1 ton and down got "serial numbers" and 1-1/2 ton and up got "chassis numbers" because they were sold as Cab & Chassis and not complete trucks???

Maybe the 1 1/2 and 2 tons all said chassis no. Could anyone with a 1 1/2 or 2 ton please check on your VIN plate and let me know. I have a proof of the four different plates ready for the printer at

I think that the hp and rpm depend on the year, but I am not sure. The hp and rpm I am going by is for 1948, but may cover 1947 and 1949.

The VIN plate on my 1954 model 6103, 2 ton GVW 16000, has the SERIAL NUMBER at the very bottom of the plate. Hope this helps.

ID plate style changed in 1953, from black plate, to blue plate. Text changed from horizontal, to vertical.

Thanks for the info. But matching plates is like matching snow flakes. I think I am pretty safe making the two versions of the VIN plate for the 2 ton with chassis and serial no. and the other two plates as is, but they might be correct for all trucks. Maybe if these plates work for people I will make other versions at another time. I am going to 3Bs on the weekend and he may have some VIN plates I can look at. I seem to remember he has quite a few Big Bolts.

Grtngs Super 55 - I just went out to my shop and had a good close look at the plate on my March '48 built 2-ton. The lettering is very faint, but I distinctly can see the notation "Serial No." rather than chassis number. Mine however, shows a different HP and RPM than on your repro, so I looked in the spec sheets in the info package I recently received from Chevrolet. It appears that the 6000 series 2-tons (and those 4000 series 1-1/2 tons w/optional RPO 225 "LoadMaster" 235.5 cu.in. motor) were rated at 83.5 net at 3000 RPM. My VIN plate shows this rating, and not the 81.5 at 3100 RPM (not that it's a big deal to me personally) - everything else is exactly as you've shown it. I wonder if some 2-tons were delivered with the std. "Thrift-Master" 216.5 motor, which would explain the 81.5 @ 3100 rating seen on your '48 or the plate you used to start with?

I'm going to go with the plates as I have them for now. Maybe if there are other combinations of engine specs I can change the data. Need to get going on it.

Just to update fellows looking for the plates. The artwork is at the printers, he showed me his proof. They look great. I have a list of people who I think are interested. There will be

25 plates for the two ton (16000 lbs) with the serial number listed
5 plates for the two ton (16000 lbs) with the chassis number listed
10 plates for the 1 1/2 ton (14000 lbs) with serial number listed
10 plates for the 1 ton (8800 lbs) with serial number listed

That's all I am having made for now since I am not in the business and 50 I can finance without "she who must be obeyed" giving me the stink eye.

If you get 1 1/2 ton plates done, put me down for two, Paul...

Neither my '37 or my "other" special classified project have VIN plates or at least I can't find 'em... wink

I can pick 'em up from you in person and pay you at that time if that works for you... wink

Is your truck a 54/55, and is the plate different than the previous years?
