I found a guy in our little burg who used to work for Auto Glass Specialists so I thought I would hire him to put the windshield in my 49 Sub. He came over last Tuesday and spent most of the afternoon trying to get it done and could never do it. He took the glass and the seal ( Steele Rubber) back to his shop to try to figure it out. Since then I have discovered in my shop manual reprint how to do it and am wondering if it is really that easy. My guy is young (thirtyish) and he tells me he has never seen a windshield installation like this. Anybody out there ever put a windshield in an AD? Can I do this myself? Any tricks? One man job? Hi Weeds, Curt B. is right on the money! The only other advice I would give is not to use engine oil! For a start it's messy! And It won't do the rubber any favors!
I've been installing windshields for 13 years and never heard of using engine oil! A light soap is sufficient! Try and use a piece of cord rather than string.I would agree with the instructions about sealing the screens though. The last thing you need is puddles in your pride and joy!

What Co. is this guy from? I could prolly tell you if he's worth a crap or not.

A friend of mine that use to do glass for a living,helped me put mine in and it only took about 2 hours,it would have gone faster but the guy I had cut the glass didn't do a very good job and it fought us a little.And for lube he used silicone spray,he says it works better and won't eat at the rubber.So it should be sealed with somthing else?I'll have to ask him about that.

I don't know if you have checked out Steele Products website but they have a PDF that does a pretty good job explaining this procedure as well. Use this link and open the pdf. Just search for your truck year and select windshield from the left hand menu.

Hey Wilbur! I checked out your p/u. Have you bonded your rear cab glass? It looks really neat! I was looking for the lock strip then I noticed the 'primer' band! Love the ghost flames by the way! I'm cutting my own screens for my '50' as my buddy bought a set which I templated,they were Cr*p! The lower corners were dreadful! I've had my door glasses and rear screen made with tempered glass.
Everything is easy if you know how!! I deal with a lot of British 'classics.' Some of the stainless trims are unbelievable!

A petroleum-based lubricant and/or a soap-based lubricant are not good for rubber over the long term.

A silicone-based lubricant is not good around painted parts or around a paint shop (if you plan to paint or re-paint any time soon).

A a water-based, water-soluble, personal lubricant is the best choice. K-Y Jelly is a name brand but there are many store brands that are just as good and just as safe for use around rubber products.

I did my windshield install myself. K-Y Jelly is a great lubricant for this job. I used a block of wood and the hood to put pressure on the center strip to get the screws started. Also I used a couple small suction cups with handles on the ouside of the glass.

Yep backglass is urethaned in using a 17mm universal molding. Windshields are the same,glued in V-butt with molding.
Removed frames on door glass',
Don't even get me started on british cars, Especially old MG's.

I could only imagine the look on someones face if I pulled a bottle of KY out of my van. HA!
I use good old fashion glass cleaner for all gasket installs.

And that is my professional non legal opinion.

be careful of the silicone spray, it leaves a residue that won't let paint stick. ron

I think they still make a product called rubber lube it works great,same stuff they use at a tire shop.Its a two hour job tops. Mark
