I have taken all the screws out of the door latch mechanism and removed the door handle. The whole mechanism is wobbling around inside the door and moving up and down, but just won't come out. Is there a trick to getting these out of the door? For clarity sakes, this is the part I'm trying to replace. The only thing left in the door is the latching mechanism. It won't slide up and down because of the piece that sticks out of the door that contacts the striker plate. It'll move forward in the door slightly but then gets jammed (kind of like SpaceBalls). I did that last weekend and cracked a weld in the latch mechanism. I was working on the passenger door latch. I had the same problem. It turned out that inside the door skin where the striker protrudes there is a flange or another layer of sheet metal. In my case the striker was hanging up on it and would not slide out of the hole. I finally stuck a knife blade in between the latch and the inside flange and bent it in a little so I could lever out the latch. Of course the latch then fell down inside the door which added to the fun.

I couldn't get a knife blade in there before but I'll keep trying. Just fiddle with it and it will come out. If so, have you removed the lock? If you haven't, the lock pin might be rusted into the latch and holding it in the door.
