My Regulator has been playing games and, with 2 jumper boosts today, its time to replace it. My father mentioned there are 2 types - one for generator & one for alternator. I've got a generator. What am I asking the guys at the parts shop for? The regulator was replaced about 3 years ago so I'm surprised it's gone so fast. Thanks for any advice.

Just go in and ask for a [insert voltage here] voltage regulator for a [insert year here] [insert marque here] truck with a [insert engine here] with a generator.

If your parts guy is worth his salt, he'll know exactly what you need.

You might also pull the old one off of the firewall and take it in for part number searches.

Well, I had to give him all the numbers from the generator, regulator, truck, etc. He quoted me $97 for the little unit. A little in shock from the price but I need my truck asap.

yeah, last time I needed one the price was about 100 - that was when I switched over to an externally regulated alternator from the wreckers, way less money and has never hiccuped once

$100 seems a bit excessive.

American Classic has them for $45.00 if you are running a stock setup in your '58.

that's 45 US $ Brendan, plus 25% shipping, and customs brokerage plus federal and provincial tax on the whole bill when it crosses the border, plus a week or 2 wait .... not much savings in the end when you can walk into a store here and have it in hand by the next morning at the latest frown

Oops...

I thought he was in the States. American Classic probably won't be the best option here. eek
