I've been considering converting my 1940 1 1/2 ton to an open drive line. I have a 235 that I want to put in to replace the leaking original 216. I figure while I was at it I would put in a smoother transmission.

So thanks to Carolines Truck and the spotting network there is a 1954 dually rear end locally, and it's cheap.

It is however a vacuum shift dual speed rear end.

Does anyone run with this rear end? Does anyone know the gearing ratios? Would you recommend the conversion or will it be too complicated?

In general my goal is to keep the original 20" 10 lug wheels, have a more reliable engine, and get a nicer shifting transmission.

I don't have specs for the '54 but I can tell you, the gears are low and lower. For the '48-'51 models it's 6.13 and 8.10.

Could be one of two rears with the following ratios: 6.13 and 8.10 or a 6.70 and 8.86.

Iam running a two speed rear vacum shift. Works fine - but be advised like has been said - the speeds are slow and slower. What kind of speeds can you run now? In low I am hard pressed for 45mph in high I can push her up to 55 for about the same rpm. I have an overdrive too, without one on the highway you will be pushing harder than you like. Good luck .

My truck goes 45-50 mph tops. With 900x20 tires on the rear. But,it will haul 4 ton of gravel easily. Although it is a slow ride.

Tom,

What kind of overdrive do you have? I was thinking of doing the same.
