Could be the pump just not keeping up with the demand at 50 - 60, but just enough to allow a slower speed. Check the sock in the tank too.
You are probably right, sounds like it is starving for fuel.

How's the fuel filter? How's the fuel pump? I'd say change the filter and pump and go from there. 1948 3/4-Ton 5-Window Flatbed Chevrolet 34 Years. Now with a '61 261, 848 head, Rochester Monojet carb, SM420 4-speed, 4.10 rear, dual reservoir MC, Bendix up front, 235/85R16 tires, 12-volt w/alternator, electric wipers and a modern radio in the glove box.

If it does, leave it shut off, pull over (only if it's safe to do this) and see if the carb has any fuel. If the accelerator pump pumps little or nothing, I would say you have a supply problem. Usually a pump and/or filter problem. Good luck, Scott

I carried a case of fuel filters with me until I finally got the tank boiled - for about ten bucks, as I recall. When checking fuel supply, don't forgt to occasionally check the ceramic filter inside the carb itself - right where the fuel line screws in.
