I spoke to the "dmv" here about YOM plates. Currently it is not a program that is offered. The person I spoke did say she'd bring it up at a meeting so I'm looking to find out which states & provinces have this program and any links to specs, requirements, paint issues (reflective), restorers and known issues.

Currently I don't qualify for Classic or Vintage plates as my truck is my only vehicle. I'm tired of explaining this to people so a YOM plate would work for me. :punch:

California will allow YOM plates, but only if the number on them is not in use already. I have them for both of my 1932 Chevrolet vehicles.

Michigan will do YOM plates.

They have to be in a) very good original condition or b) restored.

The paint colors MUST be the same as they were to begin with if you do restore them.

However:

Read the operational limitations

...And here's the definition of a historical vehicle .

Minnesota recognizes YOM plates, same thing chev32 said, they "run" the plate # and it must not come back to another vehicle. My '48 has YOM plates but is actualy licensed as a collector. Mn just registers the YOM plate rather than insuing a collector plate.

OldBlue58 don't hold your breath on ICBC coming up with YOM plates. As you are aware they have a Vintage and Collector section and it takes years to get anything changed in there.
Right now the Specialty Vehicle Association of BC (an association worth looking into) are trying to get ICBC to recognize glass body hot rods as collector cars with the benefit of reduced rates. I support SVABC but cannot go along with this move.

Here's a thread on the YOM issue posted last January . It covers quite a few issues that you may be interested in, including my saga getting my plate authenticated in Florida.

Oklahoma allows YOM on cars/trucks older than 25 years of age. The state went to the tag stickers in 1979, so a vehicle newer than that won't be able to run a YOM since technically, there isn't one from that point forward,

The number can only be run if the number is not currently in use on any other OK-registered vehicle, regardless of class/type. It costs $21.00 per year, plus the cost of normal registration (also $21.00). The regular tag must be kept inside the vehicle. A windshield sticker is issued at renewal that tells the cops your tag is a legal registration. Without that, you get a ticket for no tag! The YOM plate is treated the same as a personalized tag in terms of fees and carrying your regular tag. A tag can be restored and used, but it's supposed to be in the correct colors for that year.

olblu49 - I'm not holding my breath. I'm merely forwarding information that might help make a positive decision for the future. The fact that Ontario already has this program active makes it much easier. I told her that I'm not looking for a different rate or type of insurance - just an erra-correct license plate. I think they may have already talked about it in the past as she seemed willing to bring it up at a meeting.

Colorado allows YOM plates. You have to buy your collector or horseless carriage plates, and register your YOM plates.

I should point out, here it's PLATES! plural. You have to have two matching plates, as Colorado requires a front plate.

Good info, indeed, Old Blue!

What's more, in Montana you can get permanent registration on an older vehicle or any boat or any trailer. It costs more than an annual registration but you are done with it, forever.

Here's the official Texas stance on YOM plates, taken from their application form.

- License plates (plural) must be inspected by local county tax office
- Must be Texas plates
- Plates must be the same year as the vehicle year model
- Good readable condition
- Correct color scheme

Other qualifications for Antique License Plates still apply, such as 25+ years old, driving only to and from vehicle-interest activities or maintenance, no advertising, etc.

Here is how Utah does it, they even provide the color schemes for all the years of plates on a seperate page!

Antique (Original Issue) License Plates
Vehicles of a model year 1973 or older may display original-issue license plates issued during the same year the vehicle was manufactured.

If the antique plate number is not currently assigned to another vehicle on the Motor Vehicle file and does not conflict with a currently issued series, the antique plate may be used in substitution for a regularly issued plate. An owner who sells a vehicle with original issue plates assigned to it may also sell the plate by completing an affidavit relinquishing the plates.

Original Issue Application
Original-issue plate applicants need not complete a special application form; instead, they must bring the plates to a Motor Vehicle Office for verification. DMV staff will check the plates carefully to be sure that they are authentic and do not conflict with an existing series. There is no fee for placing an original issue plate on a vehicle.

Displaying Rejected Antique Plates
If the original issue plate cannot be used for registration purposes because the plate number conflicts with a currently-issued plate series, the owner may apply for special antique plate decals. To do so he/she must:

Submit the antique (original issue) plate to a Motor Vehicle Office for verification
Submit a current registration card
Pay a $5.00 fee. Antique decals expire every December—the yearly renewal fee is $5.00.
Note: Antique plates may be restored and repainted to the original issue paint, for limited use such as shows, parades, special events, etc.

Illinois allows YOM plates to be displayed on vehicles registered as an antique (AV) as long as the valid plates are current and carried in the vehicle Illinois I hope this helps.
