Hello fellow bolters,

I got offered another free truck yesterday. They said its a 1963 GMC truck. They dont know much about it other than its a 63 gmc truck, it has some rust, a "big engine" and original hubcaps. I will go take a look at it this weekend. I dont know much about these trucks other than what I have seen in the gallery. Looks like most of them came with a V6? Is there anything special I should look for?

The hardest part to fix, will be the area over the windshield. Everything else is available for sheetmetal. So take an awl or something and give it a good jab especially at the outer corners. A 63 will have the more modern front end and therefor more parts and kits for it that the 60 and 61's. If it's a shortbox, it will be an especially good score.

Check the dog leg below the windshield corners inside the door opening. Radiator core supports, the roof, floor boards at the kick panel and the rockers.

OK, OK! It has already been promised to me so its not going anywhere. I will probably go get it this weekend.

So I see most of the Jimmys in the gallery came with a V6. Did any come with a V8 or I6?

Should have a 305 cid V6. No options until about '66, then the 351 V6 was available, in 1 tons, I beleive.

The inline 230/250 was available starting in 64.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe those are for Chevys.

From what I've seen, those were only used on forward control and step van models. Also, on the GMC Handy-Van introduced in late '64. The pickups still used the V6 exclusively until about '67, the the Chevy 6 and 8 became optional.

My Dad had a 64 w/a 230 inline back in the 70's & I had a 66 wideside w/a 250, both were shortbed pickups. Check out Jolly's site.

I did check it. The info I've got doesn't mention the use of the Chevy 6 in the GMCs in those years, other than the forward control and Handy-Van. However, it seems that perhaps the info I have is wrong, or it was just not a common option chosen. I will admit, most of the info I have on the GMCs from that era is for the 4x4 models, and the V6 is the only engine listed. I've also never seen a GMC from that era with anything but the V6. I will say that I have seen a few Chevies with the V6, but only in heavier trucks, never anything lighter than a 1 ton.

I think you might misunderstand what I meant. I meant that the information I have in my spec books mihgt be incorrect. I did look at that page. Like I said, though, the spec book I have only really covers 4x4 models, and does not list an inline 6 in the 4x4.
I did just check a Chilton manual that I have, and it does list those engines for GMC.

Makes me curious, could you even get an inline w/the 4x4 option? Or was it just the 1/2 ton 2wd light duty trucks got the inline?
