I had posted a version of this in response to a earlier thread and didn't get much of a response in that thread. I hope it is because folks didn't see it rather than didn't care to respond. I would like some input and maybe a reference to a gallery picture with a truck with the original hood ornament.

For the 47-53 trucks there was a dealer option hood ornament that is kinda a teardrop shape that is low to the hood and has an art deco style. Many of the vendors sell a nice reproduction.

I know this because I recently bought a perfect hood for my '50 truck that had the holes for the period hood ornament and original paint under where it mounted. I was going to fill the original holes in, but my brother in law bought me the repro ornament for my birthday. He is a great guy and into vintage trucks as well. He was jazzed to get it for me. Not to offend anyone, but I am not sure that I like it. I guess I have owned my truck too long without it and it visually takes away from the wonderful rounded hood, IMHO. But I feel like I have to run it because it was gift (and I won't have to weld on a perfect hood.) It may look a lot different when the truck is painted as now it is surrounded by surface rust.

I know it is my truck and I can run what I want, but does anyone want to weigh in on how much they like the original hood ornament? Just trying to find out if there is a way I can come to like this thing. Thanks in advance

when i put my hood on, it had the holes for the ornament, i think i might have put one on if i had one, but i didn't so i welded them up, if you have a chrome grill and or even a stainless steel hood strip i don't think it take away that much. its a neat rare option, and to get an idea on the color and look take the rusty hood and paint it the color the truck will be and put oranament on see what it looks like because you have to clean the hood up anyway

I know just how you feel. I like the hood ornaments and always think I want one ... but, like you, I love the nose so much I'm afraid the ornament would bother me.

You're in a pickle though ... how can you *not* put it on!?

Go ahead and put it on. The more you drive the truck,,you'll begin to like it,,and you will be surprised at the people who notice it and comment on it,,provided they know old trucks and the options that came on them.
I just got the hood bird for my '54 pick up,a couple years ago i wouldnt have put one on,but now i think im gonna put one on my panel truck too.Theyre really cool options.

Do another hood without one so you can have it both ways,

I'd look at it this way: since the hood you now have HAD the ornament on it, I'd go ahead and put it on. I too think they're neat, rare, and cool. Like was mentioned above, you could do another plain hood later and switch if you really don't like the ornament. Best of both worlds.

I prefer to have a hood ornament... it sets off the front of the vehicle..
