I'm looking at another 1960 Apache for sale in my local area.

The problem is... NO TITLE ... I never have bought a vehicle without a title. What is the normal process of applying for a lost title? What information do I need from the current owner if I choose to buy this truck? Is this even recommended?

The current owner can contact the treasurers office at the county in which it was last registered and request a duplicate title. He or she fills out the appropriate paper-work, pays the Govenor and they mail the duplcate title to them. They sign it over to you and thats that!
Thats how it works in most states.

Jeff, each state is different, so you need to check with the people that handle tags, registration, etc. in your state. I think I do have a "historical document" from Arkansas that will go right with your truck, if you are interested email me.

Variations of this question get asked a LOT. KnuckleBusters is correct. The only way to find out for sure is to contact your local tag office. You may get advise from someone who's done the same thing in your state but laws sometimes change.

Thanks for the information. I believe I will investigate this with the state DMV office before I make any decision about the truck. Anyway, there is always another truck to buy somewhere.

Wow, seems like a lot of hassle. I think buying another truck with a title sounds better. I think I will hold off for the next deal.

One thought I would add is that you are on the outskirts of a major metro area. There must be quite a number of DMV offices within reach, check around a bit, I bet some are easier to work with than others.

I don't remember Oregon being hard to deal with, but its been more than 20 years since I last lived there.

Of the three offices (in Washington) near to me I have found one much easier to work with than any other.

It is usually a lot easier to have the seller obtain a duplicate title before you buy it. I once had to wait about 3 months for a seller to get one. It was worth the wait. The real risk is that they get impatient, and sell it to someone else for parts.

Some states are more difficult than others. I would recomend that you get the title straightened out first.

I'm in Kentucky and it really did'nt sound all that bad to get it cleared up and the truck was well worth the hassle.

If the seller really is the owner, he can get a duplicate title much easier and faster than any buyer can get a title. I would have to question why he hasnt already done so..... I know some guys buy trucks without titles. I would only say dont put a penny or a minute into any truck you dont have a title in your name. I sat on one for just under a year waiting to get a title after investing a bit over $2000. Believe me, the aggravation and waiting will make you wish you had spent the money elsewhere. Just my $0.02.

Thanks for the advice. I have decided not to buy this truck at this time. I contacted the owners by e-mail and didn't like their response. Oh well, there is always another bolt waiting out there some where.

Yes actually, the current owner said the truck ran, but thats about all the info. I could get from them. They were not very motivated to sell the truck they had advertised. No matter, I have moved on.

i just spent 1/2 a day in dmv in verigina getting a title fixed for a 42 i bought there it was worth it to me but i had to run down the last known owner it get a title from the stat in ther name and then get them to sigh it over to me and reguardless of what thay say on the phone at dmv the anser is deffrent when your in frount of them at the office just my $.02 worth
