My truck came sans data plate...I bought a new one and stamped the VIN. I understand it is mounted on the passengerside cowl. Can anyone give me a more exact location/dimensions for the plate mounting?

I have seen an illustration of it somewhere but I don't remember where. I would think there would be 2-4 small holes that match the holes in your new plate.....

There should still be the original mounting holes to help you locate the plaque. My 46 had two different plaques one above the other.
I'll have to look through my pics or can snap a new photo if you want.
Best of luck
Jim

Should be two holes there where the old one was.

On the '39 thru '46 trucks, the green box shows where the tag should be.

This is an image Peggy sent me a few weeks ago along with some other VIN related information.. I stuck the green box on the image just to make it a bit clearer as to where the tag could be found.

The tag would be oriented with the 'top' of the tag pointed twards the grill.

Also, if you don't already have one.. Here\'s a link to a 1942 Chevy Truck owners manual

Doesn't have any illustration regarding the 'Data Plate' location.. but since you have a '42 truck, it might be neat to look thru.

As far as mounting.. here's what the plate outta look like.

You normally have two holes in the plate, repops sometimes come undrilled.

There is usually a little 'intent' as seen in the picture above.. one on the top right and one on the bottom left of the plate.

You should be able to find holes in the cowl area of your truck that line up with those locations on the plate.

When installed, the top right screw would be twards the ground.

A plate on a 46...

Take a look at this webshots pic. Just confirming what fumblin posted...If you look carefully, there are 4 holes. The top set is visible (hard to see, but there). Use the bottom set. The holes on the plate will match the holes on the truck.

My 42 being a former army vehicle had the plate on the glove box. Now I know exactly where it goes.

Does anyone know what the "upper" two holes were for? On my truck, I thought that somebody must have removed the vin when painting and decided to mount it lower for some reason. Apparently this isn't so?

I have no idea.. i've seen a whole lot of old '39 thru '46 trucks and never saw a plate mounted in the 'top hole' position.

Maybe they're left over from a step during the original assembly process?

Steveg:

Just in case you haven’t received enough help yet. There is nothing in the upper two holes on my ’41 either, Top of plate to the front of the truck. Mounted with two fasteners one on the top towards the front of the truck and one on the bottom toward the back of the truck

Yeah, good point they are mounted sideways. At least in my eyes.

Thanks for all the help...I also understand that the plate was mounted with two small clutchhead screws..is that true? Where would you find tiny clutchhead screws?

Check any of the old truck parts houses. I got mine from Chevs of the 40's. They had #8X32 and #10X32
