For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 166 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2006 Posts: 166 | I have a 1951 - 3100. I can see the original interior color. Were there any other interior colors produced beside the pinkish gold? I saw a very nice restored truck that has a metallic grey interior. The owner showed me a sheet with paint chips and as I recall it had about 4 different colors. Also, what colors were the seat, side panels and headliner produced in? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,953 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,953 | Pinkish gold? Wow! You sure its not a Cadillac! My dash is grey as are the inside doors. The headliner and door panels are black. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 22 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 22 | Hi Todd: Greetings from Sunbury (about 50 miles north of Harrisburg). I'm restoring a 52 Chevrolet 2 ton, and would love to have a selection of colors and headliners. Many years ago, we had a meat plant and I drove a 52 Chevrolet 2 ton, it was my recollection that the interior was brown and green. Since we're fairly close let's keep in touch. I watch what is sold on ebay, looking for some reference. Anyhow, it seems that all of those that I have seen that are light grey look to have been painted over the original color. Yes, it looks like something you might find on an 80s Cadillac. | | | | | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 351 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2004 Posts: 351 | Actually, this should be over in the paint forum. Anywise, the interior was a very fine metal flake in a kind of bronze. For all years in an AD. A flatner should be added for the single stage. Here'the PPG colors: PPG DDL3613 or DCC5558. One is a single stage and the other a two-stage. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 166 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2006 Posts: 166 | Thanks for the codes. I will look in the paint forum. Didn't even look to see that there was a paint forum This is the only one I read. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 | I believe that the original color was called "Rose Tan", and it was a special sort of paint that was fired in a furnace to make it appear to have been "Hammered", IIRC.
Jim Carter's has the paint, and instructions on how to make the oven, but I do not know how well the color matches. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Have some of the replies been pulled again? Because, I'm having a hard time following this thread and it is beginning to not make sense to me. We were talking about the original interior color for a 1951 - 3100, where did "baking ovens", "Rose Tan" and “hammer tone” enter into the picture???
There have been reams of discussion posted here on the AD interior colors. And the conclusion that I am coming to is that everyone has a favorite name for the interior color. I just finished a couple of weeks worth of searching the archives for "Interior Colors" and from what I found, Bob Adler has had the most exposure to, and done the most research on the actual interior colors, so from my point of view, what he says is the gospel.
The original paint companies that GM used have gone under, been bought out, changed management, etc., and apparently destroyed or lost the original formulas. So these cannot be cross-referenced by the paint companies that are in business now. It seems that the closest match has been acquired by finding interiors that have the original color, that are in excellent condition, that have been garaged and are not faded. Then scanning the color and letting the computer come up with a modern day formula from PPG or other paint sources. Obviously after fifty or sixty years any paint, no matter how well it is protected, will have changed hue slightly. In other words, unless you had the original formula, an exact match to the original color would be impossible to come up with. The same situation goes for the engine colors, a best guess match is the most we can hope for. This problem becomes quite evident by the paints that are being marketed by the dozens of vendors that sell AD parts. Take any 10 vendors and compare what they claim to be, the “closest match to original” engine and interior paints and you will get 10 different colors! Now, this is just what I have observed over the past fall, I am very new at the restoration of an AD truck and would welcome any advice or additional information to what I have learned to this point. The color is a dark copper brown w/ metal flake. I don't know how to post a picture here. But if someone sends me an email address, I can send them the pics from Picasa and they can post here. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | no expert but I did own a 50 AD back in the early seventies that was an original one owner when I got it. It being owned by a local mayor it had been taken very good care of. Like others I do not know the color but after 37 years printing fabrics and looking at colors I would have called mine a grey.....sort of a hammered grey, which is what I intend to but on my 52panel. But heck, what do I know :p | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Like I've said many times in the last few months, I'm new here, and I have a lot to learn. But, that's the first time I have ever seen the interior of an AD that was that dark of a color and also one that was copper colored. Am I correct in my understanding that this is either PPG DDL3613 or DCC5558 and that you got that color code from Bob Adler’s information package?
And Brendan, what was that about an Oven, could you clarify that please?? Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

Computers can change colors from what they relly look like, but that looks awful dark to me as well. I will try to post some pictures when I get time. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 483 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 483 | The heater had a hammer type finish. Not sure about the cab though.Take the door strikers or trim off and see what color is under them. You might remove the door wind lace. Are the screws painted? If they are it's proably been sprayed. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 | I have done several hundred chev pickups over the last fifty years including some that were near factory new condition. I have never seen any metallic color on an AD interior, discounting some heaters. The most common color was called "taupe", which the dictionary discribes as "dark gray usually slightly tinged with brown, purple, yellow, or green". On my site you can see a 52 that the steering wheel/column paint is too light but the door panels and sunvisors are near correct. Also there is a 66 with the correct interior color that was used on many AD's when redone. I like the color and it sprayed on well. | | | | | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 351 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2004 Posts: 351 | Hey guys, Drove down to the PPG Paint yesterday. I've been troubled by the interior copper color just sprayed on my truck. Some of you have commented on the photos. The paint guy could not reference DDL3613 but he did find a chip and description for DCC5558. It turns out that the modern paint is for a 2000 Toyota. The description reads; Grey Opal Mica. I took it out in the sun aqnd sure enough it matches taupe dark grey with a slight hint of brown that Coilover described. But there does seem to be a very slight metal flake in it. Not like what I got. Also the PPG paint guy said it takes a ton of flattner to get the high gloss out of it. So i'm going to call my paint and body guy and ask him to read the can code to me. Something got screwed up. Thanks for the verification. -jeff | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 166 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2006 Posts: 166 | Jon D, Nice job on the truck. I posted a link in the Interiors forum of a collection of interior photos. I don't know if there are 2 the same. I think that the color you got from Chevy Duty is what I see the most of. The seat and side panel colors vary a lot though. I am curious as to what colors were available from the factory. | | |
