I was reading Classic Truck mag and there is a full page ad saying that in 2008 a "New Old Truck" is rolling out. What the heck...It's called a Southern ...Looks like a 49 1/2 ton... With all the goodies. That stinks. they can't make them like they did back in AD days. Anyone else see this??? If so what do you think????

it is suppose to be built in Liberty S.C. a small town about 75 miles from where I live. I would think there is lots of places to support such a venture with the BMW car plant near by with all its vendors having companies close by but it appears this truck is all special stuff from the hot rod folks/vendors. I would like to have one but not for 55,000. Same thing I said about the Chevy SSR...to pricey for what you get.

That is sweeeet!. GM has long fallen out of touch with the average consumer, just take a look at the latest line of GM trucks, and I've always Questioned the SSRs reason for being.

This truck blows it away....Great job Southern!

There's been alot of debate on why the ford driveline. The only real reason that I can determine is that the cost must be lower than using GMs crate engines. Some have theorized that it's about emissions of the feul efficiency hurting GMs ratings. However this would not be the case, as the final manufacturer (Southern) would take the resposibility of emissions, feul economy, and safety concerns, not the component supplier. Case in point-Honda supplies the v6 option for the Saturn Vue. Honda is not responsible for the emissions or feul economy, GM is.

I've read that Ford will warranty the drivetrain and service the trucks at dealerships and that GM would not (GM was the first choice).

I wouldn't count on the ford dealers actually warranteeing a vehicle that they didn't manufacture, unless the dealer actually sells them. It'll be a money losing situation for the dealers.

Why would GM want to sell the same engine to
a company thats marketing a vehicle thats close in
design to vehicles from the past, such as the AD..
Why do most hotrod people use Chevrolet power in their Fords...Hmmmm. BB

I've talked to the guys @ Southern, it is a nice looking truck with all of the modern updates ! They sent me a nice brochure,
check them out on line, they seem to have done a good job !
As for the $55m, that does not sound all that bad considering all $$ & TIME THAT I'VE PUT IN MINE ! The paint options are
"unlimited" ! My only problem is the drive train, I can't get
over the use of a FORD motor in a Chevy (looking) truck !
You would think with all of the Chevy "crate" motors being
offered out there (reasonably priced) & the reliability of the
small block, that would have been my choice !!!

SEAN S... Did you see the article in Classic Truck magazine, the
Jan. 2007 issue ! If so, they did an article on my truck,
see page 86, my wife was shocked, she's gets sarcastick
at times with all of the time spent on the makeover...
but she does enjoy cruising in her now....go figure !

Liberty is about 45 miles from me. I usually go to the area on Wednesdays. I'll stop by there to check it out.

Here is their website.

labluver, crate engines don't go with factory warranties! As said several times before, in this and another thread... General Motors wouldn't go with using their drive train but Ford did. It will have a warranty and it will be servicable.

AD_, I think you nailed it. We're not talking about a crate motor, but rather and entire drive train with computer and harness, all matching components.....Complete. That make a huge difference.

Looks better than anything I've seen coming out of the big three in many years. If someone working for the big three had an original idea it would be scrubbed in favor of some bizarre concept that tries to be a modern version of an old style. The Southern is definately the work of a lean and independent company. It looks sharp inside and out. Just enough comfort and safety without getting too sissy. Ford wins this contest for thinking outside the box and having the guts to agree to allow their drive train to be installed. I bet they sell every one of those trucks quickly. The price is good considering what it would cost to build a like truck oneself.

I dunno, man.. it looks like a 5 window AD truck with a chopped top to me.

So it's already got 2 strikes against it in my book, and a third strike when I hear it'll feature a Ford engine and drive train.

I'd rather buy a 3 window AD pickup and sit it on an S10 frame with a 4.3 V6 and have a 'real' Chevrolet.

an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.

The engines may be Ford but looking through the gallery, the engine shown in the finished truck is indeed a LS small block Chevy.

The grill is way cool

I hate chopped trucks

AD trucks are OK, but not for 55 large

the color idea is way cool!

Ford components.. frown

Overall---naw-but if they get into Art Decos and come up with something-then we can talk...
