When I order '53 rear shoes, they don't match up with what I have. I'm thinkin' they may be from an earlier AD truck(?). The rear end and enclosed driveshaft are typical of an AD truck. Also, is there an 'old brake expert' out there who can help me with an emergecy brake problem? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy Kevin, Just what is wrong with the shoes you get? The shoes in the pic appear to be the bendix self energizing type, but those wheel cylinders and the lack of an upper anchor point for the shoes says there probably from the pre bendix era, possibly 51? Hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 127 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 127 | they look like the ones on my 51... I thought the enclosed drive shaft was phased out by 53? help me on this one gurus...

I believe that they only lasted to 1950 in the 3100 but there may have been another year or two. The Huck brakes are discussed in the Chev Truck shop manual and there is a discussion about the emergency brake. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | Those are Huck brakes. They were discontinued on the 1/2 tons after 1950. Somewhere down the line they got changed. Probably the whole rear end was changed. You need to get 51 up brake assemblys & change them back. The Bendix are better brakes & easier to work on. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. The pictured ones are definitely Huck cylinders. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | Whats your ebrake problem? See ya, Jeff | | | | | Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 56 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2004 Posts: 56 | Hey 'olblu49'...the fronts are not Huck. So I'm assuming the rear end must have been changed out some time, and replaced with an earilier one. Supposedly the cab (based on the VIN) and all the rest is '53. And it had a full-pressure 235 in it when I got it. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 33 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 33 | Kevin, and there we go, right here on this page, the parts I am looking for. If you change back to the newer style brakes, would you be willing to let go of the emergency brake parts from the huck style? I am looking for the round rod and all the parts connected. I have a post in here asking for the same thing. Pardon me for cutting into your post.
