The reasons I want it off are: 1) it's ugly 2) it is in the way of remounting my spare tire under the bed hanging off the frame rails with the stock doo-dad for this purpose 3) it is welded to the bottom of the rear bumper, so I can not take the bumper off 4) I want to put the stock '65ish license plate bracket/holder on there, but this hitch is in the way 5) I wanna put a more legit hitch on there, if I have one at all. 6) it's ugly So... I live in Tucker - Stone Mountain area, which is East of Atlanta, GA... I am looking for a shop that can take this thing off for me. Would a place that installs trailer hitches be able to handle this kind of thing? Hmn... Ok, thank you for any leads/information. -W | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 | Seems to me like anyone with a set of acetylene torches could burn it off. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | Take a road trip Woog, and I'll take care of it for ya. I picked up a cheap grinder at HF (15) and have been surprised at all the things I've done with it!

Instead of being welded to the bumper, though, it was bolted. Ugly as sin. But I have used it for light duty stuff around the house (pulling a trailer and parts car up the driveway, etc).
When I get the funds to have a real receiver hitch installed, I'll cut off the old one, with a grinder and cut-off wheels.
Just a suggestion, but rather than pay someone else to remove it (plus your time and gas to get there), invest that same money in a good 4-inch angle grinder, a pack of cut-off wheels, some ear plugs (you'll NEED ear plugs! I prefer ear muffs), and safety glasses, and have at it yourself.
Then, now that you've got the grinder, you can buy a couple of wire cups, and eat rust away on a surprising number of projects.
When it's a toss-up between paying someone else to do it (provided it's fairly simple), or investing in the tools so I can do it myself down the road, I always buy the tools.
Sorta like "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach him how to fish and feed him for a lifetime."
And why haven't I seen your truck at my swap meet in Braselton the first Sunday of every month?!

I have a Sawzall and a 4" grinder. I bet we can get it off in a jiffy. Heck, there are a few good places for lunch around here too. We could reward ourselves with a pint or two. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,897 Socket Breaker | | Socket Breaker Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 2,897 | Shipwright - go slow when yer driving around in there... the little tiny cordless sawzalls are pretty useless tho.
