Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 1,229 | We apologize for the lengthy outage today. It was a combination of confusion on the part of the hosting company (about who was supposed to fix the problem), and a genuine problem with the server. (For you geeks out there, a hard drive ribbon cable was bad and the RAID card got "confused", causing multiple reboots. The constant rebooting - eight times in 7 hours - screwed up the file system so bad that I had to do multiple fscks and syncs to get it working properly.)
Hopefully, the problems are resolved, but with computers, you never know. I think the urgency for getting a second server has gone up substantially, so John and Peg and I will be discussing that issue in the coming days. Right now we run everything on one server; website, Forums, email (imaps), smtp, dns services, webmail, etc. We need to move to a two server solution so that we can run the website on either server. That way, if the primary goes down, the secondary can take over while I troubleshoot the problem.
If you've been thinking about donating to the Stovebolt site, now would be a very good time to convert those thoughts to action. | | | | Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 310 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 310 | I'm glad you fixed it, because I'm lost there. Next pay check I’ll donate some money to the Bolt, because my hands are shaking after just 4 hours without it Next pay check will be a month or so as we haven't really started harvest yet and my mom taught me that you can't spend money you haven't earned yet. | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 205 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 205 | Post an address so I can send a check. He went down there as soon as he could get free from work. It was a bad morning trying to get stuff done (as some of the new Gallery additions know). The site kepts re-booting and booting me off! I thought it was MY stupid computer, too. Finally, by 8 a.m., I noticed only 20 people in the forums. AND THAT'S NOT NORMAL!! So, I called Paul at home. What a way to start the day. Sorry Paul. Even if half the 11,000 users would send $1, we could send Paul off shopping. For those of you who haven't been sent to the office :p , you might want to see this page. The link in the lower, right hand corner gives a list of folks who have donated to keeping the site going - both 2005 and 2006. It also has our address. FYI - no one on the site is paid. It's all volunteers. All money that comes to the site, goes into the site. If you can help out, that's great. ITMT, we'll keep working at it. Thanks all. Sorry for any pain and suffering this may have caused some of you Peggy

I'll get a check headed your way after I get paid on the first of the month. I know it's easy to spend all your time in the Forums. After all, it's a great group of folks from all over the world sharing a hobby they love. But if you're not regularly cruising through the rest of the site, you're missing a great deal. Everybody should drop by the Gallery regularly. We're adding trucks there every day, and you can get some great ideas just from seeing what other folks have done with their trucks. The Stovebolt Newsletter always has interesting information as well and is updated monthly (sort of - we get around to this stuff as we can.) The Links pages can help you locate needed items for your project. The Stovebolt Locater page can help you connect with bolters from your area. The reason I'm the Stovebolt Geek is because, a long, long time ago, I wrote a post in the Lounge (may it rest in peace) entitled "Gawd I love Stovebolt!". John read it and asked if I wanted to volunteer to help, and the rest is history. I don't want, nor do I need, money for what I do here (in fact I donated money until they made me stop), but without my help, this site could cost John and Peg hundreds of dollars every month for professional services. The value of all our volunteers is far beyond the estimated cost, because volunteers care more about what they're doing than professionals who are paid to maintain things. So volunteer to help if you can (donating money is one way to do that), but always remember, you are welcome here if you never do anything but read and enjoy the site. A huge thank you goes to our sponsor, American Classic Truck Parts (click on the flashing link above), without whom this site wouldn't even exist. American Classic bought our first server, pays our monthly hosting fees and paid for all the expenses related to the hard drive crash last year. One way you can help us is by checking out their site and buying parts from them, if you need them. The biggest thank you of all goes to all the bolters, whose participation in this site makes it what it is - the greatest site on the web for antique GM and Chevy trucks. | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 1,048 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 1,048 | I’m glad you have apologized.
When I bought my ’41 I had absolutely no idea anything like this site or all of the people I’ve met here even existed. This page has become a nice part of my day. For a short time I was afraid it was just plain gone.
All kidding aside it is a great site, you will get my support in a few days.. | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | Paul no apology required.
I appreciate what you do and I am among those addicted to this site. I missed the outages today because I let work keep me away just now.
I hate it when that happens!
You know you can always contact me if there is a way the technology I control can help.
You will shortly have an email from me on other stuff.
