The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area General Truck Talk Lots of Forums, let's use them

I see that we have a number of posts that could easily go into other forums.

I think it would be best if we kept general truck talk to general truck talk and then put paint and body items in the Paint and Body Shop, and the same with Interiors.

Thus when we (especially me) need to find information we can just search the specific forum and speed up search times.

I know what you might think - if its in the other forum then people won't read it or respond to it. However, if we get in the habit then everyone will.

For engine and transmission issues: The engine & driveline shop.

For Paint, Body repair, question on paint color, refinishing, etc: Paint and Body Shop.

For Interiors its easy: Interiors

For electrical questions namely wiring, starters, blowers, lights: The Electrical Bay
but because we also have a radio forum where the experts will help you learn the difference between a resistor and a vaccuum tube: All Things Radio-related.

And we have the Door and Bed clinics as well.

Personally I think engine swaps to modern iron, front end clips, suspension improvements, and even more modern transmissions could easily qualify for the The HiPro Shop.

I am loathe to move topics, but might start up again just to distribute the load on the message board a bit. Your help makes things run better.

Hey Fella's, right up top there where it says "Forums"? Click on that and it takes you to the front forum page. On that page is a list of all the forums and the descriptions of what goes on in each.

#1 - how do I sart a new topic within a forum?

#2 - I wanna ask why they are called stove bolts?

I owned 2 48 chevys before & never heard the term.
Am now shopping for one again. Think I found the truck to buy. Thanks for this website, it is most cool & I will have more questions!

Thanks Bill... figuring out the site as I look around more, but I still do not get "stovebolt".

Maybe I'm not old enough, what is a stove bold, other than the trucks?? Fill me in... wanna become an appentice rather than NEW GUY.

a "stove bolt" is a particular type of slot head bolt used on wood stoves waaaay back - very similar in appearance to bolts used on the early GM 6's so the public hung that nickname on the Chevy 6 and it stuck so good the trucks themselves are still refered to that way

To elaborate a little bit;
The early chevies used a lot of 1/4-20 bolts for assembly,with the lifter cover,and later the valve cover being the most noted. This was the same size bolts used to assemble the wood stoves of the time.(My uncle told me it was common to find either the truck's engine sheet metal or the wood stove on the farms in his area missing bolts,pirated to make the other work.)

I'm new here but I need some fast info. if you please. I had an S10 frame bought but found out it was a 4 wheel drive. I have a 54 Chev 3600 but want to downsize it to a 1/2 ton. Can I take the fronend stuff off the 4 w/d put on 2w/d stuff. The guy is getting ready to take it to the salvage yard real soon like the next day or 2. Kinda new at the truck stuff...Virg

From a newbie perspective (relatively), and a surfer of other sites, my opinion is that the more forums there are, the less used they get, the less information is distributed to casual observers, and the more time and effort it takes to find something.
For instance, up at the top of this post, it was mentioned that the engine swaps, front clips, etc. should/could go in the HiPo shop. So now, to find the info, I have to search the chassis shop and the hi-po shop. That's twice the time and twice the mousing around to find the info.
Custom interiors: hipo or interior shop?
Power windows: electrical or interior or glass?
I've got questions on lowering a '62 Suburban: do I go to the Hipo shop, the chassis area, or the Suburban area? Or do I label that I want to lower a '62 C10? That moves it out of the Suburban forum.
I like sights that have a very limited number of forums, because it lets people spend the majority of their time in one or two places, searching for the info. Otherwise, they have to enter a forum, read the headlines/subjects, back out of it, go into another area, read/back out, etc. etc. etc. And then at some point, there are a bunch of forums they don't enter at all.
And that's the real bummer: Say I have an electrical question. Someone might know the answer, but they don't surf into the electrical forum that week because they aren't looking for anything electrical related. But if there was one big "general" forum and I post my electrical question (or ANY other topic), he would be in that forum checking in for the day, would see the posted question, open the thread and could contribute.
The Buick Club of America went to a bunch of different forums, and I think overall user friendliness is down, and people don't go there as much.
The amount of different forums/headlines is the only thing I don't like about this site: I'm sure there is a bunch of info I could use, but I don't have the time or desire to search through every single forum.

Here's a perfect example to illustrate my point:
In the Suburban section, the lead post is about swapping a V8 inth a 6cyl '61 Suburban.
There are a bunch of different forums that post fits in. Unless you own a Suburban, you probably have not seen that thread, because you don't go into the Suburban section.
But there are a lot of '60-'62 pick-up owners here who would no doubt benefit from that thread.
But they'll probably never see it.

Got a yes and wouldyabelieve a parked for six years '71 GMC 3/4 T. Custom Camper. Some fuel, a battery and a little elbow grease, and I drove it to my place a few blocks away. Free! Have some starter pics to post soon and a gazillion questions to ask before I botch something up. True, but what about all the stuff I miss because I wasn't looking specifically for it? For instance, someone else just posted a question about where to find front end parts for their '60 (same as my '62). The replies were useful to me, and now I know that I can probably also check with those companies for other stuff--and I'll check with them to see if they have a front sway bar, etc.

I think what I like are more passive forums--all the stuff is there, and you can click on it and learn a broader scope of info, rather than the more specific sites where you have to know what you're looking for it, and don't go looking for it until you NEED to look for it.

if yer not lookin for anythimg in particular but don't wanna miss anything, then ya need to check the "todays active topics" at least once every 24 hours, and look at all of them - all the stuff is there - there's about 120 posts listed right now that have been made in the last 24 hours, get readin!!

When I come to check on the site, I always go to Today's Active Topics. It use to be, I could check in the morning when I got up -- maybe 1 page from teh night before. Good grief, now it's like five pages.

When I'm working, I check every hour and it's always more than one page.

So, BradB - you can check up to 7 pages of Today's Active Topics and scan what you want to read.

Let's face it, there's a LOT of information on here, constantly coming in. And it'll come in again and again. So, if you miss it once, you'll probably see it again (as someone comments on the post).

Dan - at the top and bottom of every page there's a graphic icon: "post new topic" - just go to the most appropriate forum from the main forum list and click one of those

and welcome to the garage - check out the details in the glove box manual , there's a page all about posting to the forums
