Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 5 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 5 | The carrier I have for my daily drivers will cover my 55, but only for liability. I would hope there is an insurer that will provide full coverage for the old truck, but who? Suggestions and recommendations are welcome. I live in North Carolina.
Thanks in advance.

Most will give you a "quote" on line.

I have a 46 1/2 ton, 2-52 1/2 tons, and a 63 Falcon convert. All of them are fully covered by my regular insurance carrier, Allstate, with $0.00 deductible on Comp. and $100 deduct on collision.
They don't have a limitation on mileage like most of the Classic/Collector car insurance companies. Additionally, they didn't require an appraisal, and I can put any of them in a "storage" status, (and save some money) at anytime I'm not gonna drive them for awhile.
I've been told, and fortunately have not had to put it to the test, that should something significant happen, I just need to be prepared and able to submit proof of value when filing the claim.
Good luck. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 1,867 | I use hagerty through my allstate ins. It was something like 95$ a year and has the same full coverage of my others which is 100/300/100K.
I had pictures taken of it by the agent and stated a value of 5K for a start. I think I get about 5000 miles a year to drive it. If I up the value they may chose to have it appraised though. -Jeff | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | Rowlesters55.. I use State Farm who had me get it appraised and pictures. Their approved apprasier also is an old friend of mine so it didn't cost me anything. J.C. Taylor was going to be HIGHER because I have a 350 engine in it or simply put..its modified. Rates also depend on how many vehicles, tickets, etc etc. I have a big discount (15%) for being with them so long and I also have the house and all vehicles with them. I still end up paying about 400 a year. Can someone tell us how Hargerty looks at vehicles?? Am I stuck because its modified? | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | I might also add it depends on the amount of appraisel. My 37 appraised for $20,000 so maybe thats why mine is so high? I do know this. I have check all the "regular" insurance companies and none can beat State Farm I suppose due to my discounts. I have also been in two real bad wrecks, 1997-2000-and a fender bender in 2001. They had to pay out a lot under my "under-insured" and they were very good and speedy. Just my .02 worth and Oh, the wrecks were not my fault which is probably a good thing!!!!!! | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 576 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 576 | redid our ins policy for wifes car and my work truck, then we talked about the 49 its going to be awhile before its on the road, but was curious. forget the co. but they had two rates .stock and modified. no apprasial just some pictires and a "agreed" upon value. i threw out $15000.00 and it ws only $179.00 ayr for full coverage but it was limited on mileage. had also heard somewhere if vehicle passed nsra inspecion some co.s give a discount this one didnt. 1949 Chevrolet 3100 "When this thing hits 88 miles an hour, you're going to see some serious sh%t." -Doc Brown

If they "frown" on you wanting better coverage, that's their problem, don't worry. Hagerty is good, as is State Farm for original antique vehicles. I'd steer clear of Allstate- a buddy of mine has a body shop, and he says every Allstate screws people EVERY time, by not giving them enough to fix their vehicle, giving them extremely low "total" value, etc. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 887 | Some insurance companies have really bad reputations when it comes to paying claims. I'm not going to mention any names specifically, but several of the larger companies have been sued by thousands of individuals, attorneys general of numerous states and classes of people in a single suit.
geico quoted me a reasonable price to cover my 51 and as long as I have a newer vehicle with full coverage (comprehensive, liabilty and uninsured motorist) they'll give me comp on the truck too.
On a separate note. I strongly reccomend that everyone get limits of at least 100/300 if not more and never, never, never waive or refuse to buy underinsured motorist. I've seen too many accidents where the other driver is at fault and only has 50k of insurance but the person who got hit had 100k of medical bills. So what happens to the other 50? The person who got hit has to pay it unless they have underinsured motorist insurance limits of 100. Underinsured insurance will cover upto the max of its limit- so, underI coverage of 50 and the other driver of 50 doesn't mean 100, it means your UnderI will cover up to 50 total (in case the other driver only had 25).
Check the difference in premiums and if it's only 20/month to get more coverage, its worth it.

My Chevy II is covered for $15,000 for $210 a year, my 34 Streetrod for $35,000 for $270 a year, both with Grundy Insurance. I changed about a year ago from Haggerty. For the streetrod my premium with Haggerty for the same coverage was $590.

Vehicle must be mostly stock (especially no modification with a substantially more powerful engine than in the original). 2. You must store/park the vehicle in a locked garage (at home). 3. You must have at least one other vehicle ("daily driver") that is insured with full coverage by another insurance company. 4. You provide pictures and set the replacement value. My other vehicles and house are covered by State Farm and they did not care when I removed my old trucks from their coverage. They were very expensive (2-3x more) for less coverage. Also, if you have storage for multiple antique vehicles, the coverage for additional vehicles with Hagerty is very inexpensive. This is because you only pay once for personal injury and liability. My third '54 1/2 ton truck costs about $45/year for full coverage and no deductibles. Tim | | |
