Why do so many of you guys hide your email addresses?

I can't speak for others, but I get enough junk mail etc. without putting my e-mail address out there for god knows who...

I also don't want to mess around with having multiple E-mail accounts. (have to many passwords etc. in my work world, don't need to remember any more.)

I do allow e-mail through the stovebolt page, so it's not really like you can't get a hold of me, if you want to. Besides that, you can always send a pm.

My issue is that I can't send pictures to members without their email address, and I can't post the pictures since I do not have a personal website.

Why not stick a post in the IT Shortbus and see if someone will put your pictures on their server space. I know people have offered to do that in the past. Whenever I get far enough down in this *virtual pile of notes* I'll come across some of those volunteers. And I'll post their names and email addresses in the Short Bus forum.

I used to make my eMail address public on everyplace I frequented on the 'net.. and I always ended up on somebodies "check out all these jokes I got today" eMail lists.

Of course, those eMails came with EVERYBODYS EMAIL ADDRESS IT WAS SENT TO attached to the eMail header, which often gets gleened by spam list people, and the next thing you know, you're getting a crapload of junk mail.

Sometimes I don't check my mail for a day or two, and it's a real PITA to have to sift thru the junk to find important stuff.

I get an average of 85 junk emails each day, so I guess I'm used to it. I see your point and thank you for your replies.

I finally took the time to sign up at a website. This will be very handy in the future. Here is my picture address:

SPAM - I delete the emails from names I don't reconize. I do read the ones that come from/thru Stovebolt though.

I don't even read attachments from my family. They are not real computer savvy. So, I'd rather delete them (they are usually forwarded stuff anyway) than risk loosing stuff on our computer.

Paul has something set up on the server here tho that works pretty well to keep most spam / junk out. Also, the Firefox email program is real good about catching stuff.

Which is good. We get a lot of GOOD mail.

Mine is set up to be emailed through the 'Bolt.

Then again, I use a webmail account for all my various online forums stuff for just that reason.

Spam and weirdos. Don't underestimate the weirdo factor. I do get a fair amount of private messages through the SBP, and I try to respond with my "real" email (unless I forget).

I have both my AOL and Yahoo mail boxes and have to say their spam filters work pretty well. A few might get thru but not many. Now here is the kicker, where I work, a military installation, they have installed all kinds of software to protect from who knows what. Updated on a daily basis. Guess no spam filter though as everyone gets a share of it every day. Go figger.

Mine is not secret, it's in my signature and that's true on every forum I'm in.

And yes it means I get lots of SPAM but between a mail server SPAM filter and some rules in my email client it's managable.

But if you send me email make sure the subject line is clearly not SPAM because unless I have a rule that recognizes your email address I will quickly scan the subject line and delete without previewing those that don't look personal (and personal 'enhancement' products don't count).

That's what hotmail accounts are for. Plus, I only use my regular e-mail address for stuff outside of the several forums I'm on. I delete most of the stuff on hotmail, anyway, and my regular email accounts don't get all spammed up with crap.

Glad you got your pictures posted. It looks like a nice truck. Would like to see more, when you have the opportunity.

If anyone sends unsolicited attachments to me I won't see them anyway. They go in the trash bin.

You can have your own personal website for as little as $3.75 a month. Why use one of the "free" picture sites?

One of these days we ought to do a Tech Tip to help folks get their own domain and site. It's really not hard to do that part, or the html.

It's actually fun.

Almost every major Internet Service Provider(ISP) has webspace that comes with the cost of the dial up unlimited hours account. Most of them have an allotment of MB's of webspace per email account. The standard seems to be, 10 MB of webspace per email account on a dialup. For the DSL and cable modem accounts, it may vary some more.

I've seen many of the accounts for the cable modems with like a 100mb of webspace along with the cable modem connection.. all included with the regular monthly bill, but many folks do not know they have it, because they never go poke around their ISP's homepage.

I think we should just look out for each other.
If a fellow bolter needs to cut down on some email we need to pool our money, hire a hacker, and send to each junk mail originator, several photos from our gallery. After a while the junk mail people will buy an old Stovebolt and stop the mailings.

When was the last time those of you complaining of SPAM clicked "Show all headers", then "Forward", and sent the unsolicited SPAM to the Abuse Department of the senders ISP? Be sure to click on "CC" (carbon copy) to let the SPAMMER know you have sent it and don't want more.

If your state has anti-SPAMMING legislation you may also wish to forward a copy to the correct enforecement department to give them leverage to prosecute.
