Is this the case if you bought a in the crate 350 this year and installed it on the 1946? Seems that trucks sold in 06 can have emission peroblems from dual ehausts. Are catylitic converters required on the 46 chevy? Merle Haggard for President and God Bless Johnny Cash | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | If you are running carburator & dist. you can & should run dual exhaust. You do not need catalitic converters unless some local polution laws require it. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum | | | | | Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 1,571 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 1,571 | Pollution laws usually go by the year of the vehicle or engine, whichever is newer...short answer - in this case, yes. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 119 Member | | Member Joined: Nov 2000 Posts: 119 | GMCpanel, I think the "vehicle or engine, whichever is newer" applies only to vehicles which originally had emissions regulations.
I don't think there are laws anywhere in the US that would require smog compliance with a 1946 model, regardless of power plant.
The crate motor is specifically marketed as a replacement for older vehicles, and not as an "2006" model. The fact that it is sold in 2006 does not imply it was certified to 2006 emissions standards. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 85 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 85 | I agree Locobreath, as im running a 350 in my 46 with no questions asked. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | I wouldn't be so sure Loco - up here if you put a newer engine in any vehicle it has to meet current emissions standards, regardless of the year of the vehicle - the '46 trucks didn't come w/ a modern V8, so it's pretty obviously no longer a "46" truck - down there I'd think it might vary by location
the question tho is really can you buy a crate motor today that doesn't hafta have all the emission controls to run properly, and will it work well w/ duals - the answer to that is yes

The crate engine is not a 2006 model engine, they don't make a small block any more. It's just a rebuilt core that could be originally from any one of 3-4 past decades. The 350 is listed as pre 79 and is 330 horse with 380Ft lbs tourque. The loop hole here in Vancouver is that if you raise the GVW you get into commercial grade insurance and don't need to go through air care. It cost about 20 bucks more for insurance but no hassle involved with testing. 20 bucks well spent in my eyes | | | | | Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 331 Member | | Member Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 331 | Plus it is a new block not rebuilt. the deluxe model comes from pan to carb also.
