Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 43 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 43 | Hi; Do I need to add some kind of lead substitute for my 1954 half ton? It was designed for leaded gas. I'm told the valves will burn without an additive. My old Farmall M seems to run just fine on unleaded - for about ten years now. If needed, what do I use? Thanks. I've been running my 1966 250 for 11 years on regular unleaded, and have not had any valve problems yet.
Some people use Marvel Mystery Oil in their fuel tank as a upper cylinder lubricant. I'm sure that you will get more replies on this topic. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 355 Member | | Member Joined: Feb 2005 Posts: 355 | I had the same question Rich. Here is what the guys had to say on this subject . . . http://www.stovebolt.com/bboard/cgi-bin//ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=22;t=002579#000000 | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,953 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,953 | Been driving the 49 for about 15 years on unleaded with a 1956 235". Have not touched the valves or seats yet. Only do about 3000 miles a year however. At one time I was concerned about this and met ths old gentleman who seemed quite knowledgable on the topic and he told me that he put in a cup of ATF in the tank each time he filled it up. I tried it but thinking a cup would be good, a quart would be better. Not! The truck shook, smoked, popped and ran terribly until I ran the gas thru. So I don't know if the ATF would help or not but I have not done that trick for a long time. And as was written above, if you are not driving at sustained high speeds I would not worry about it.
