Metal would conduct heat to the carb, just what you don't want. Jim Carter and other dealers sell the correct high temp plastic insulator.

But to answer your first question, yes there needs to be a gasket between them.

The advice was if you have a metal spacer you need two gaskets.
Intake, gasket, spacer, gasket, carb.

It shows manifold, gasket, spacer, gasket and carb. The pic looks like its from an assembly manual. BTW, my spacer is made out of some kind of dense plastic. I've never seen a metal one. They are supposed to insulate from the heat of the manifold. Metal seems counter productive. | | |
