This weekend we are putting dad's 46 1/2 ton to work. We are hauling square flax straw bales to cover our cistern, septic, foundation, and dog house, for the winter. Since I drive a GEO, and the old Cutlass is just to rusty to pull anything anymore (might leave its rearend on the road if we pull with it--- it's getting retired this month!), and dad's farm truck blew it's tranny, all we have left is the 46...

Way to go, Tempest, that's what 'bolts are for. Be sure to get some pictures of the loaded truck and post 'em. By the way, you are giving your dad a hard time about his truck being down while the 60 year old 'bolt keeps on workin' aren't you grin ?

That load was about 1.5 tons. The next load was bigger, the guy dumped until it ran over the sides and ends, was about the height of the rear window. I would guess about 2 tons of topsoil. Didn't have time for a picture, it was warming up and the kid was getting tired.

Not bad for $25 a load, shredded and stored under a roof. It takes just over a 1.5 ton load to engage the overloads on the old gal.

I recently hauled a few ricks of wood w/my 64, the fella I bought the wood from was worried about the truck carrying a full rick at a time. The old truck did fine on the 10 mile trip home, several times w/no problems at all. I did avoid the big hill w/stoplite @the bottom. Brian

64fleetside, I have never heard of the term "ricks" before. Is this similar to a face cord or cord of fire wood?

So a rick of wood is the same as a facecord or 1/4 of a cord. I grew up in the northeast and we've been burning wood since I was a kid and I have never heard the phrase rick of wood used before. Does anyone know where this term came from. Is a rick a term more commonly used in other parts of the country? I looked it up on dictionary.com and they did not have a definition for rick that delt with firewood, but they did define it as: "A stack of hay, straw, or similar material, especially when covered or thatched for protection from the weather." Just curious.

a rick is[was] more commonly 'a hayrick', or hay stacked in the field in a way that sheds water - a rick of wood

atomarc - Tempest lives in an area where the ground freezes ........ also flax is all around you, even in CA - it was the first 'domesticated' crop, and is used to make linen, linseed oil and fine paper, similar to hemp, which is not what you smoke in CA, unless maybe yer buyin a "rick" grin

This is what I found on a "rick". red58, thanks for the info.

A traditional unit of volume for firewood. A rick represents a stack of split firewood 4 feet high and 8 feet long, the logs being of a standard length, usually 16 inches. This is equivalent to 1/3 cord or 1.208 steres. However, because the size of a rick has been manipulated by vendors, it is illegal to sell firewood by the rick in several U.S. states. A rick is sometimes called a face cord or tier. The name of the unit comes from a old Norse word for a stack of wood.

Around here rick is used by the old-timers. It's like stuart said, it's easy to cheat on if you cut the logs short.

We hauled 2 loads of bales with the old truck, about 12 bales per load. Gave the guy that we got them quite the laugh to see a 60 yr old truck bootin around in his field. We got pics, but I haven't had them developed yet. Both the truck that we hauled with and the broken truck are his trucks, ours is not ready to haul anything with yet.

We put flax bales over out cistern to keep it from freezing in the winter. It can get to about 50 below here (with wind chill), and that is not the type of weather to be going down into the cistern to break open ice and water. We also use them on our septic tank to keep it from freezing, and around the dogs house to keep the wind and snow out of his house.

I have a picture of my 48-3/4 ton with a ton of hay on back. It handled it great, but I had a hard time seeing behind me with my little mirrors. Love to see them working.

By the rick is the only way firewood is sold around here (Western Kentucky). We heat with wood (combined with a passive solar house design) and most years we burn between 3 and 5 ricks.

No doubt! We had the bales up over the back window! And it only has the wee little drivers side mirror.

There's a landscaping outfit in Iowa City, IA that uses only 'bolts in their fleet. I was so impressed.

I just bought a '53 'tonner that is going back to work as soon as I unstick her.

i used my 1970 chevy CST-10 as a hauler once.... big mistake sorry to say but usein a 1/2 ton coil truck to pull a car trailer with a fullsize truck on it is not a good idea.... but then again it didn't help that my frame was rotted out above the coils (didn't know that till after) but ya needless to say after hauling my 68 IH 1100C my frame was a little bent... the rear bumper was like 1 1/2 feet off the ground with nothing on it.....

yes i know this site is all about old bolts but i just thought i'd say this anyway i got an 85 chevy c10 pickup 305 4 barrel turbo 350 (spose to have the overdrive but it went caput and the guy just put this one in) well anyway most people nowadays get a 3/4 or 1 ton if they know there going to be hauling but i'd have to say my old 1/2 could knock the socks off a new 3/4 ton that poor truck i treat it like a 1 ton when i haul loads of steel (got 8 leafs in the rear extra capacity rear end (factory option) i think they shoulda gone with a 350 while they were at it)

I went to a AD BBQ this weekend and my truck was the only working one there. Everyone else has never seen a spec of dirt or rock in their bed. I can't live that way.

I just don't see the point of even having a truck if you're not going to do truck stuff with it.

Old 'bolts aren't tissue paper cream puffs.. they were built to work, and work hard.. most of them been worked all their lives like a rented mule, and they'll still do the job today.

Sure most don't have power steering, or air conditioning, or cushy heated leather seats.. but thats because they were built for the working man to get work done.. not to shuttle some high society soccer mom to Starbucks for a double late.

But different strokes for different folks.
