I cant believe I am maried in the first place. Never happier though. She still is pushing me to work on the truck and supportive of large tool purchases. I can even get her to help push the parts around the garage when necessary, and to sit and talk to me in the cold garage while I clean things for hours that mean absolutley nothing to her. I don't have a truck buddy other than her and you guys. She is lots of fun. I think we are both living more comfortably and happily that ever before in our lives. No kids though she is pushing some and I have no idea how i would handle it. I am sure most of you are not that interested but I tend to share more here than with anyone else so there you have it. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 24 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 24 | congrates man and hope she stays the same about the truck

I wasn't too sure about kids either, but now I'm wishing I'd had several more. My baby is almost 16, and likely to leave in a couple more years.
Who is going to help me on my trucks then?

I notice a lot of stovebolters have great praise for their spouses. I wonder if stovebolters have more successful marriages than the population as a whole (~50% failure rate)? If so, maybe we are on to something here. Old car hobby = better marriages. So make your spouse happy and pick up another old vehicle to restore today!

Can't add much to the marriage sentiments except to echo what's already been said. A good marriage is like a good team of horses -- they pull evenly and together, always keeping the double tree perpendicular to the tongue. When one goes, they both go. When one spooks, the other calms. What one is thinking, the other is, too.
Now, about kids -- you are right to think long and hard there. You only have kids because deep deep down, you really want to take on the life-long task of rearing and developing another human being.
They are cute and cuddly for the first couple of years, then they become a long term investment -- you invest a lot of time and effort with very little return. Finally, when they get to be 24 or so, you start seeing a little return on that investment of effort. Then, if/when they become fully independant and contributing members of society, the investment pays off.
Take a good, long look in the mirror and ask yourself if you have the moxie for that. And also consider this -- if you find out the hard way that you don't, how will you like asking your parents to finish what you can't complete (because of divorce, job, etc)? Will that be fair to them?
Having children is a huge task and undertaking. You don't do it just because you like kids. It's sort of like buying a puppy because you think puppies are cute.
Something to think about. John

FYI: I have two kids and I am the oldest of six.
Kids will change your life in ways you can not imagine. I've known lots of parents to divide their lives into pre-kids and now. When kids are like luggage, when you carry them everywhere they go, they dominate your life. You can't travel or even go out for an hour without arranging their care. They can't be ignored.
That will pass after a decade or so but its a long-term commitment.
I find kids old enough to share ideas far more interesting than kids who are still luggage. And some of both my proudest and most unhappy moments have been associated with my kids as they have grown and developed.
My 18 year-old daughter got accepted into her first choice college yesterday. Great kid making good choices about her future, and making dad real proud these days. Not every day has been like yesterday.
My son is a fantastic help around the house and on my projects. Over this past weekend we installed new cabinets in our kitchen. I might have managed it without him, but its rewarding to teach a kid how to do that kind of thing, and great to watch your own kid carry some of the weight of life.
He helps with every significant old truck project and is fun to have around in ways that most friends can't compete with. If you get a good one, your kid will be one of your very best friends.
Getting a good one is more how you raise them than what they are born with. If you wait till you think you're ready to be a parent, you may never get there. On the other hand if you aren't ready to settle down and be there for your kids, you're not ready.
I'm approaching the empty nest stage of life, and while I'm proud of what my kids are becoming, and how I believe they are going to lead their lives, I'm also sad realizing that they will soon become independant of old dad and I know I'm going to miss them.
Kip listed some of his happiest moments. For me I'd have to say that my kids have been a big part of my happiest moments too, and I have far more happy memories of kids than bad or difficult memories.

Then came a steady stream of girlfriends who all eventually broke up with me cause they said I loved my motorcycles, and or cars more than them. Then the first wife who tried to change me from boots, black tee shirts and jeans into Donny Disco. It didn't take. She flew off on her broom, then another girlfriend who didn't mind the vehicles,so I dumped her, lol. Then came the woman who actually thought I was a good catch, unreal,,bikes and all.We got married and it's been just wonderful for the last 16 years. Kids, I never had any of my own,the thought of kids never entered my mind,my life was always day to day, live a year with a woman until she kicked me out, then on to the next one .Joy had two daughters from he first husband. So here I am raising her kids while they were raising me,quite the experience, and worth every penny. Oh,trucks,my wife just loves old trucks, she likes motorcycles in the house. Our first date was in a beat up 77 Chevy van I had at the time. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 | Kip said: N2 here are the strongest feeling *I* have felt in my life.....so far, no particular order.
