I have seen the various aftermarket 3 point seat belts for bench seats... but I am curious about mounting them up in a AD truck that has the corner windows... the '5 window cab' as some call it. The truck in question: http://hardin.home.mindspring.com/1953/1953.html Has it been done? Any of you done it? have pictures? seen a website with pictures? Or do folks just use the lap belts in this situation? Thanks. -W p.s. that is my dad's truck. He's had his longer than I've had my '65, but mine drives around. hehe. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2002 Posts: 9,115 | Woog, there have been threads on this, but I haven't fully taken them in. However there is a hole up high in the post, maybe partially hidden by the windlace. That hole is accessable from inside the post if the head liner is off. This is because the top of the inside of the post is open at the top. I assume that that is where the reinforcement plate is placed. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 4,095 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 4,095 | i saw it in one of my magazines they weld a plate just back of the door frame. thats why i want to go to seats that have a built on seat belt ( buick lesabre about 2002-2005. Do a search and you'll find lots of insight and archived photos. For safety sake in a truck with latches that do not keep the doors closed in a crash, this is an important feature. Visit Juliano's or Gem Street rods for components. Juliano's sells a backing plate you can weld in for the strongest pillar attachment.
In my '54 GMC, there is actually an existing hole for the D ring on the pillar (as noted, hidden by the rubber windlace). I will widen this to accept the D bolt and back it to avoid pull-out during a crash. The seat is out as of last weekend and I am putting these in as soon as possible (if I could find the time)! | | | | | Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 452 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2003 Posts: 452 | Mine doesn't have the corner windows, but my experience may help. Got a set of belts (Dodge truck, actually. They fit better than Chev behind the door pillar.) Made a mount plate like the original. For the top corner, welded BIG fender washers to the mounting nuts (Grade 8 to match the original collared bolts). Drilled 4 holes: 1 for the bolt (9/16 if I remember), and three 1/4 spaced around the bolt hole, close enough to be covered by said WASHER. Taped the nut/washer to the open end of a combo wrench (tied a string to the box end in case I dropped it) and lowered the nut/washer down behind the inner skin near the pillar. Used a short bolt to hold everything from the inside and plug welded the WASHER in place. To keep the seat belt bolt from backing out, use thread locker and/or SLIGHTLY deform the nut prior to welding to the washer (thread a bolt in about 1/2 way, put the side of the nut on an anvil and strike the side of the open end with a hammer to oval the bolt exit side. SLIGHTLY.)
If my method is unsafe, I'm sure someone will chime in. I'll appreciate it as much as you. The belts are firmly anchored and easy to use.
Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice) \'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run. My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787. Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but ignorance means you don't know you can't do something.
