I have taken the gas tank out of my 66. I now have a desire to put in another seat that will provide an armrest. I wonder if a bench seat from a 92 or 97 Silverado will fit. How much modification would it take to add mount to the floor?

a seat from a 2000 or newer buick lesabre should fit. you get the armrest and leather or cloth. around here they run about 150.00 complete. ron

If u go with later model chevy or gmc truck seats they will bolt flat on the floor. The yucon, tahoe or denali also would work really well. Best part is they have the seat belts built in.

I guess the thing to do is go the junk yard and see what options I have and then measure and modify the cab floor as I need to.

Has anyone ever put S10 seats/seatbelts into an AD truck?

I think most of the s-10 seats are too small (not wide enough from door to door).

I'd love to have a head rest.

What I'm planning on doing with my seat this weekend is to find just a backrest that is not as thick as the one that came with the truck. Then I'll use the material from the upholserty kit to cover to replacement so it'll match the bottom and give me some breathing room infront of the steering wheel.

T-Bird seats are kinda nice.

If you put in seats that have the seat belts built in, does the floor of the cab or some other sheet metal need to be reinforced? Since the seats are only attached at the floor, the floor metal seems a bit dinky to hold the seats down in the event of a collision.

have you ever looked to see what is holding the seats in a new car.... they are pretty dinky too.
at most just a stamped sheetmetal brace.

I used 2000 buick seats( leather, electric and heated) in my 50. When I bolted them to the floor, I made 1/4 in. plates for underneath the floor for added support.

Wilbur, did those go directly onto the floor or on the "riser" (not sure what you call it) that the stock seat sits on?

For the buick seat I had to make risers. I downloaded some pics. have a look.

Welcome to the bolt danielinca,
The s-10 is a good place to start but you may find the seat will be to low. Take a tape measure to the scrap yard with you and start measuring different seats.

William, I can't remember if I asked you this, but do the Buick seats fit with the gas tank remaining in the cab?

I don't have the tank in the cab, it's out back. But I don't see any problem with them fitting with the tank in the cab. Their seems to be plenty of room behind my seat.

I picked up a bench seat with a fold down arm rest from a 95 Silverado. Its as close to a bolt in as you'll find for your 66. Some of the newer trucks have integral seat belts which would have been nice but for $30.00 I can't complain.

Wilber what kind of gas tank do you have in your truck i need to get one for my 50 chevy

The tank is from a 70 mustang. I made the frame from 1in sq tubing then notched and boxed the rear crossmember to get the tank up into the frame higher. I then cut the top off the old filler neck from the truck and welded it to the tank to be just below the floor.

I had much the same question. I'm in the middle of repairing rust on the floor and am replacing the rear cab mounts on our 66. The seat belt nuts are welded to the cab mounts so I thought maybe a larger heavier guage metal plate underneath would be a good idea for safety. The existing set up is only the floor sheet metal and then the thin metal on the floor support.Each are probably only 18 guage metal. I called someone I know who is an expert in vehicle standards and safety ( he's also restoring an old "Harvard" airplane, a "Texan" I think in the USA). He claims that you would need about 5000lbs of force to rip that seat belt nut out of those 2 layers of sheet metal. He said that if you're in a severe enough collision where there is that much force, seat belts won't matter to you anymore. If I was installing a seat with integral belts I would probably run a couple of 16 guage or so straps under the floor where the seat bolts are, but more for my own piece of mind than anything else.

Back in my towing days I was called to a lot of ugly collisions but I don't recall ever seeing a seat or seat belt bolt ripped out of a floor.

One thing I would do is use Grade 8 high quality bolts to attach the seat. The bolts you've got left over from assembling your kid's swing set wouldn't be a good idea..

I don't know. 5,000 lbs sounds like a lot of force, but when you are trying to dissipate the force of your weight moving 40 mph or so to zero in a fraction of a second, you may get up there pretty quickly. If you're just talking about a lap belt, its probably not a problem. Adding a 2.5' lever (the seat back) as a prybar amplifies the force. One guy I was talking to recommended only the lap belt. He said the B pillar won't hold much anyway. However I didn't see a sliderule or pocket protector on his shirt.
