Hi.all -first time here, and looking forward to a lot of learning about my old chevy.I bought this truck in very good shape. As i have time to work on it im running in to little problems. This is probably why i chose this project i love old trucks and a challenge.I ordered items for an oil change and general tune up.First the oil filter didn't fit(ordered from obsolete chevy parts, and jim carter)The catalogs were very specific and it should have fit.The points sent were not right ,the distributer cap was to big.I thought maybe the motor was not original.I checked block numbers and yes they are for 41 to 46 235c.i.Last resort i took the points to advanced auto we looked through their pics on the computer.I will find out tomorrow but the points for 46 to 48 look like the right 1's.Is this common in getting part's for the old trucks?

Welcome aboard fellow Iowan. There's getting to be quite a few of us now. What parts of Iowa are you from? And as always, we need to see some pictures of your truck, we're funny that way.
Good luck getting it going,
Scott

Welcome Old truck lover. I don't think it is that difficult when you know what you have. I'm not the expert on engines here so I'll hold my answer, but sounds like misinformation somewhere in the chain, and that could even be the person filling the order at JC.

Oh, wheres the pics?

Oil filters were not stock in '42, so there could be confusion among different aftermarket canister types. I suppose it could also be possible to have the correct engine block but a newer, or aftermarket distributor.

Your local store should have most of the tune up parts youll need. One thing I know can be different is the dis cap and rotor. I think 47ish and before is about 1" taller while the later ones are shorter.

Try looking up these #s at the parts store. Borg Warner parts
Rotor D10
Cap C16
Points A40V
Condenser G102A

The points and condenser may not be the right ones. I looked on the wall were I write my part #s down and couldnt decipher as much as Id like.

Also if you have the taller dizzy youll need the taller cap and rotor but hopefully itll get you close.

Take out your old filter and see if its got #s on it. Good luck and get some pics!

Jeff

Welcome to our web site! The guys will get you going on your engine challenges -- be sure to check out the Engine and Driveline shop, too. As well, be sure to check out the rest of the web site -- use the menu bar at the top of the page. We have lots of tech tips, feature articles and even a Gallery with more than 1,700 trucks in it.

And speaking of, it's really easy to post pictures to this site! All you have to do is email a couple of them to Peggy at [email protected], along with a writeup about your truck, and we'll do the rest.

Keep the questions coming! And we're glad to have you aboard.

Regards,
John
