My dad and I can finally add ourselves to the list of people who own COEs. We just went half and half on a 1941 Chevy COE for $1000 at a rural car dealership of all places. Dad owned this truck when I was little and I even have a picture somewhere of me by it when I was 4-5 years old. I have pictures of it now too. smile

The history of it was that the truck actualy started out as a logging truck and then was converted into a fire truck after the war. As you can see, the tank is gone and it is not much of a fire body. Current plans are to take the old fire apparatus off and then put on a 16 ft flatbed. Yes, with the long wheelbase, it can definately handle that. The worst part on the truck is the left fender so far. It will be coming home next Saturday if all goes right. smile

Chevrolet COE's were only offered, in 3 different wheelbases back then. 110in., 134in., & 158in. GMC offered many more, plus you could special order, a chassis to your spec.'s. This one, being a Chevy, was probably stretched at the Fire Apparatus Company, that installed the body.

Actually, this truck started out as a logging truck when it was new. As far as I can tell, there is no signs that the frame was stretched on this truck. Dad said the 1940 he had as his first big truck was the same length. Most township fire trucks around here were kinda short and the body was built locally just to fit that long wheelbase. smile

If the axle to axle length, is more than 158in., It had to have been, a special order chassis. Longest production line Chevrolet COE WB, was 158in. What number, is on the ID(VIN)Plate.

I'll have to check that once we get it home this weekend. Oddly enough, a guy just emailed me that he has a 1953 GMC 2ton for sale. We had an add up looking for an old truck and now it is being answered after we found one on our own. It never fails...

I was just talking to dad and he said it is a 158 inch wheelbase. He measured that Saturday when we went to buy the truck. The fire body probably makes it look longer than it is. I have a few memories of this truck, but not much since I was only 4 years old at the most when dad sold it. wink

Update on the COE. The truck is home and dad has already gotten the junk fire body removed. We have mostly been working on all the 'repairs' someone else had done. The left front fender is rough and someone did a really bad fiberglassing job on it. The outer door skin on the driver's side is like paper and hidden by bondo. It will need some TLC for sure. Got new spark plugs in it already and am going to make new spark plug wires for it next. Dad has pretty much taken the truck over. smile
