Right in my backyard, and I missed it! I would love to have a COE for a horse-trailer puller. 1.5 and 2 ton AD trucks are a dime a dozen up here; I wonder if you could mount a cab like that on an AD big bolt frame?

Unfortunately Spanky, the yard I bought my 51 5100 from makes a regular habit of cutting the back half of the frame off the big trucks. Another yard does the same thing. For them it is strictly a business proposition. Nobody buys the big trucks and they take up too much space. A moment of silence now for what appears to have been a good truck.

Seriously, I don't know jack squat about welding, but I dont see why you couldnt just weld in the back half of a "conventional" 1.5 or 2 ton truck onto that, hook up the drive shaft, and off you go.. provided you could get a title.

Ohh.. or make some kind of monster COE 'Burb out of it! That would be pretty sweet!

In my neck of the woods, the guys like to chop the back off the big trucks and make trailers out of them.

My local junk guy has several Ford, Studebaker, and Dodge big trucks that came in with a good dump bed.. he likes to chop the front end off and send it to the cruncher, then welds a gooseneck deal to the spot where the cab used to be, mounts a lawnmower engine to the hydrolics pump, and then he has a pretty nifty dump trailer he can use to pick up more junk.

He also has a nice collection of old truck rear axles.

I really dig that shovel handle on the transmission shifter (no pun intended)

I don't know how hard you watch E-bay, but this seller takes pretty good care to get a good price for his Art Deco stuff. He probably saved this half a truck from some yard. I don't know where he comes up with all of them, but he sells quite a few decos. With all of the salt we have, most are tiny bits of rust along the roadside. He must realy beat the bushes to find them.

Boy, whats left of it is in pretty darn good shape, a lot better than mine was when I got it. I think I will keep an eye on it, you know, for dreaming purposes only!

Bill, I don't know what your truck looked like when you got it, but I know what it looks like now and it's eye-watering good to go!

Thanks John, not bad for a rookie I guess. Looks were deceiving when I got it. Didn't look to bad in the pictures, but after a little research and some photos from the previous owners previous owner surfaced , my suspicions were confirmed. The old quick paint on top of loads of rust. Its come a long way.

It is a shame that it got cut up,but I guess if you have a bunch of stuff to store you would look at it from a space is valuable standpoint.
At least he kept the business end.

some people are just plain stupid. alot of guys that haul scrap dont ever relize what they have, its just metal to them. i know a guy that cut up a really nice 60-63 drivers door. hauled it to scrap. its a shame what some people will send to the crusher.

I agree but the parts the survived look great!

This was a truly good looking truck I saw it several days ago and thought it would be a good buy and then I saw the rear end(or the lack there of) and it reminded me of what my dad would do on the farm. Dad would chop anything we had to make it useful for 10 to 20 more years.
I wouldn't know what to do with this truck "however I bet my DAD would".

i found a cabover that has the rear end yanked but not cut. hope to inquire about it tomorrow along with another cabover that's sitting on a friends farm. the one with the rear gone is a early 50's chevy or gmc, and the other is, well i dunno. my buddy just said it "ain't got much of a hood, and the engine is under the floor, but i think it's all there and if ya could, please get the damned thing outta there."

An idiot in my home town had a 1955 Chevy Nomad wagon sitting in the weeds. He would not even consider selling it to some snot-nosed teenager (me). Even back then (about 1971) I had seen the production numbers and knew they were relatively rare.

Well, my town had a cleanup drive, and they brought in a car crusher to take care of all the "junkers" around town. Yep, you guessed it. By the time I got out of school that day, the Nomad was 4 inches high.

I think they guy is burning in Hades to this day for that.


My dad has a similar story about a 1920s John Deere tractor. The scrap dealer was getting ready to cut up this pristine, rare, but otherwise useless old tractor. He offered to sell it to dad for $125, but it was the 50s during a drought, and dad didn't have $125 to waste. So a tractor that would now be worth $20,000 or more is instead recycled somewhere...

I remember seeing a 1950 Chevy 1 1/2 ton truck go to the junkyard about 2 years ago the truck was in real good shape but I didn't have the money to buy it then

$3870.00, not bad for half a truck!. Man, and I thought about getting in on that auction a few days ago. The cab looked like it was in pretty nice shape-especially the grill. I looked for 2 years to find all decent pieces for my grill. Oh well, my next project will have to wait.

A couple months ago I almost bought a '67 C60 tandem axle truck with a grain box on it, it was all original with the 427 or 366?BB w/ a 4bbl Holley and 5 speed tranny with the original two speed rear and tag axle. It got crushed along with a 1966 C50 dump truck I was also looking at buying, some guys just don't give a $hit about these big trucks anymore I guess. Hell there was even a 1958-59 Chevy 58/5900 series school bus right between those trucks too!

yep i know personally about how scrap guys only see metal and $, they dont see rust free or antique or classic, or any of that, they jut see quick $, evne if its not alot,
they would rather get a little $ quick than save any of it evne for a short period of time in order to sell it to someone

they are in a big hurry to scrap, always

they dont save a single piece of anything ever unless they have a use for it themselves, in which is rare

so mucxh good oold stuff has been wasted, and more will be, always

Well guys, when you can get more per pound than you can get selling a running, working big bolt, that's what's going to happen. Everybody thinks big bolts are great but no one wants to pay any money except the junk man, that or everyone wants to steal it. Face it, not everyone loves the old iron and even if you do, it's not a cheap hobby. I wish it weren't so but until these trucks catch on the torch will take its toll.
