I drove a 1924 Dodge for a couple of years, and hand cranked it until I got the starter/generator chain fixed. It was easy, only 4 cylinders with real low compression.

I've hand crank started my 38 1.5 ton, but mostly use the electric start. Heard too many stories of folks being injured by kick back. It is more of a novelty for me I have the crank so every once in a while i have to try it.

have not hand cranked my truck, never really wanted to, it is enough just to reach for the foot-starter, now this morning I did have some trouble with my gas edger,, I hand cranked and gave up on it,,,,Fred

I noticed my '46 two ton has the spot for the hand crank, and a little snap on piece that pops off the grill to slide the crank into, but I never tried it.

Mostly because I dont have the crank!

You can bet that if i'd had the crank back before I got the flywheel ring gear replaced, i'd have tried it!

I was lucky the crank, lugwrench, and jack were still under the seat when I bought my truck.

Before I took my 40 GMC apart that is the only way I would start it. People really get a kick out of it. Starts first crank every time. Just make sure you leave your thumb out, like your hitch hiking, that way if it does kick back the crank will spin in your hand and not break your thumb

I've got a crank.. i keep it hanging in my garage along with my collection of rare hood ornaments.

I hand cranked the old 216 before I yanked it out, but it was beyond starting by that time.

I've got a 1936 Allis-Chalmers WC that has no choice, hand-crank only, because there's no starter motor. Electric start was "optional equipment" on that one!

Hey Hotrod Lincoln,

I have a AC-WC Speed patrol (Road Grader) that's also hand ckank only. Have you ever seen an "Un-Styled" Speed Patrol? I've seen a few "Sryled" ones, but never "Un-Styled" I'm looking for info...

Thanks,

Mike B smile
